    Re: 1 1/16" fret advice

Flat or radiused fretboard? If you're used to playing a radiused fretboard and your Flatiron is flat, that could make a difference.

    Re: Why Mandolin?

Tuned in fifths and you can walk through a doorway with it.

    Re: Blue chip picks

Like many people here, I've tried many, many picks... and, like many people here, I always seem to come back to the Blue Chip. I use a TAD 40 on my oval and a CT 55 on my F. Just like the way they...

Regular posters here become teachers and mentors to us newbies. Count yourself among them and know that you've influenced my time with and knowledge of the mandolin. Thank you.

Re: Which gauge strings do you use?

Before you buy, you might want to post the mandolin that you'll be using them on and what kind of music you'll be playing.

    Re: Informal Poll

I'm 69 years old and have been playing mandolin for 4 years or so -- I play guitar and some banjo. I have 3 mandolins and am very happy with them -- the most I've paid is 4K. I play them every day...

    Re: A new prototype mandolin

I'm a classicist who usually hates modern instrument design. But this grabs me. It just looks right. And cool. And lasting. All the good stuff. I would run with it and run hard.

    Re: Attention Silverangel owners

A year and a half with J75s did wonders for my Stiver F. Played her heavy and hard, and she really opened up. If I played in a band or in jams a lot, I'd probably use this string exclusively. Have...

Re: What strings are you currently playing?

Am really enjoying a set of GHS A 270s on my Stiver after using J75s. Strong G and D courses with smooth, quiet slides. A has power. The only weakness is that the E seems a bit light. Think I'll go...

Re: Info on J. Bovier mandolins, please

I'm another satisfied customer. These are great mandolins for the price. I have a 2017 A 5 Custom that I bought new. Took 3 months or so of daily playing to open up, but it has plenty of belly and...

Re: Kentucky KM-1050 vs Northfield F5S

I think your range of mandolins would grow quite a bit if you were to buy used.

    Re: Stiver Mandolin Experience

I was waiting for Demetrius to weigh in, as he's played and owned more top shelf mandolins than I've ever laid my eyes on. I've owned a 2015 Stiver F for a year and a half and love its balanced...

Thank you, Dave. That clip at the end with Sierra and Chris has me grinning from ear to ear.

I'd go for the Ruhland F5X at Carters.

Re: How Much Better Does It Get

It's really personal preference, although large hands seem to like a wider nut. I have three mandos - one with a 1 1/16 nut, one with a 1 1/8 nut, and one with a 1 3/32. I don't have large hands,...

    Re: J Bovier mandolins

Looked this thread up so I could add my 2 cents: these are terrific mandolins. I bought an A5 Custom 2 1/2 years ago. It was a little tight when I got it, but opened up after 8 weeks of daily playing...

Re: Problems with my first mandolin

Are those J-74s? That's too much string for those unreinforced tops - although, that sinkage looks pretty extreme.

    Re: Can never enough "Orange"

I think the Gilchrist was awesome - but may have been a little bright for him. Similar to the Kimble. His Loar has a throaty depth that works perfectly for their style of music. The Sullivan was...

    Re: Info on Stiver

Nitro lacquer. But call them about nut width. My Stiver is 1-1/16 and has a flat fretboard - not his usual. That looks like an intriguing mandolin with its torrefied top.
