    Re: Nother newbie

As a forever-newbie, I can assure you that Mando Cafe is a good forum for all levels. No question is too basic.

Your mandola project sounds like fun. Keep us posted on your progress.

    And...
  2. Re: Sound difference between a 305 and a higher end Mandolin?

It sounds like you have a reliable player and you like it. So instead of rushing into anything, it makes sense to wait until you find something that really seems like a big improvement.

    Re: mandolin tattoos

    Looks like the other instrument slipped its cuff. Must've been a flute. . . . slide whistle? . . . piccolo? . . . uh . . . .

    Nice!
  5. Re: New mandolin question. (eastman, the loar, richwood)

Welcome to the wonderful world of mandolins! The folks here are a big help — as you've already discovered.

Jeff and Allen are making a good point. Here's another:

Like you and a lot of other...
  6. Re: Tips on getting more volume out of a 3 week old Mando?

Naw, that's part of their magic. As several mando pros have assured me, you spend half the time tuning and half the time playing out of tune.

    Re: mandolin tattoos

I have a picture of an invisible mandolin on me somewhere. If I find it, I'll post a photo.

Re: Thile using an SM57 mic

    Ahem: "plain old"?

If you can't get it with a 57, you can't get it.

  11. Re: Mando & Fiddle: The value of double stops

It's been said that Charlie Daniels owed all his popularity to open strings and double stops.

(My humble: Whatever it takes and by any means necessary.)

Re: Starting to see the difference

Yup! That's why I got one. I was starting to worry about arthritis, tendonitis, and the whole wide, wonerful world of -itis.

The dobe has been gathering dust, so when my buddy Buddy came over last...

Re: Starting to see the difference

I did that when I started on dobro. Must've drawn a dozen charts. It helped a lot.

The standard dobro layout itself is simple — even simpler than mando: just two major G triads an octave apart —...

Re: Starting to see the difference

I've been wondering about that lately, too (69!), but Ramblin' Jack Elliot just played here — the day before his ninetieth birthday!

So now I'm figuring I have a good twenty or thirty years ahead...

Re: Starting to see the difference

Ow! Power to you! I tried concertina for about a day and half and finally threw in the towel. In fact, I threw in the whole laundry load. Hadn't been that stymied since I tried pedal steel.

    Re: Please critique my playing

And that's something that only comes with a lot of repetition.

Since mando is usually an ensemble instrument rather than a solo instrument, it faces the same challenge as, say, an electric guitar...

    Starting to see the difference

As a typical guit-picking folksinger who came late to mando, I'm starting to see one beneath-the-surface difference between the two.

On guitar, I've always learned to play patterns and shapes,...
  22. Re: Seeking "mournful" mandolin - like Levon Helm with The Band

The clip doesn't open on my computer, but I can say that I was doing trem on guitar long before I tried playing mandolin. It's easier on a guitar simply because there's more space between strings.

    Re: mildew in case

Yup. You nailed it. My guitar closet is, indeed, damp. Rain gets in. The chimney needs to be covered, its flashing needs to be caulked, the closet's back wall needs to be torn out, what's behind it...
