Re: How high do you go

Sometimes I want to sound like a woodpecker on a tin roof, but not very often. I have gone up to the high D on the E string on Kentucky Waltz but only because Grisman did it.

    Re: Mandolin stands

Stands are important on the stage for switching instruments, alternate tunings, different instruments etc. I keep them on a stand at home for ready access and I do a lot of switching around at home...

  6. Re: Just tuning. Will it make things better?

Not an expert on temperament but I was forced once to attend anger management classes. I heard Bryan Sutton say that he tunes to the key he's going to record in. e.g. if the tune is in C then tune...

Re: Three string chords - good and bad?

Use them all the time. Once you get into extended chords you can play any chord you want if you ignore the root. Let the bass guy play that note.

    Re: Double Stops Question

I don't know of one, Sherry, except Laura's (pickloser) paper on the subject. I kind of found them myself but people showed me some things as well.

    Re: Double Stops Question

I think of double stops as part of the chord as mentioned above. 1-3, 3-5, 1-5 etc. It isn't always true but generally you'll be good with one of those. Then you can invert them for a different...

Definitely go see Trevor and put your hands on all of them and listen to the fine differences. You'll know it when you find it.

Re: Why keys of B and B flat?

For me it's all about the sound. Keys "sound" different to me and it's not just pitch, it's more like different colors. Chords are the same, Gm isn't just Dm at a different pitch, it has it's own...

Re: What's your new fiddle tune?

Working on Devaney's Goat. Dave Surette uses some triplets in unexpected places which at 180 bpm is a challenge for me. So the last week has devolved to triplet practice, which I need.
