  1. My favorite Red Bear pick just broke after a decade :(

What are the best/most economical caseine picks out there now? I've got Vinny Smiths and Bluechips and Wegens. Should I buy another Red Bear or are there other good options out there now? What is...

Re: Eastman El Rey 'weak E pickup' hack

The thin gauge of the mandolin e-string can be problematic to pickup with a magnet. Dead E is a common issue with emandos. There are replacement pickups available on the market that may do a better...
  6. Re: 4-String, Solid Body Electric Mandolin Options

The Mandobird, like many four-strong emandos, has a rather dead e-string. If you buy one, expect to have to swap-out the pickup for a Bill Lawrence or something similar. I did this with my Kentucky...

    Re: Bag or case

I didn't see a mandolin bag on Reunion Blues' site. Do you have to order a Uke bag?

Re: NMD, But there's a problem

Upgrade to a 750. She'll be ready for that soon enough! LOL. (I tried to interest my sons in mandolin to no avail, but I never expected my youngest to run out and buy a banjo -- the shame of it all!...

    Re: Eastman needs new strings

Thanks. I want to match the D'Addario Monels I just installed. I may try it on my next restring.

    Re: Eastman needs new strings

Anyone know where I can buy single Monel strings? I broke one putting on the new set and I'll buy a spare but would rather not break it up for one string. I tried just strings but they didn't have...

    Re: Eastman needs new strings

I'm not saying all of them, but surely many of the quality issues were due to illegal knock off versions of their strings being sold online. Who you buy them from can be as important as what you buy.

    Re: Fender medium-gauge guitar pick

I use that kind of pick for a guitar, but for mandolin, I want something with more backbone, like a D'Andrea Proplec or a casein pick. To each his own.
  17. Re: Strap for a Strad-ol-Lin? There's no strap button.

I put a button on the heel but ran a bootlace under the tailpiece for the other end.
  18. Re: Strap for a Strad-ol-Lin? There's no strap button.

But since I would be forced to removed the screw holding the tail piece in place, I just ran a boot lace underneath the tailpiece as recommended here rather than mess with the structure. I did put a...
  19. Re: Strap for a Strad-ol-Lin? There's no strap button.

BTW on types of straps, my Strad-O-Lin has a nice matching braided leather strap, but my Mid Mo M-15 has a leather boot lace, and my Morris has (*blush*) a used white cotton sneaker lace.[/QUOTE

  20. Re: Strap for a Strad-ol-Lin? There's no strap button.

Since I was given the Strad-o-lin and it's my number two mandolin, I'm going to install the strap button. I just have to go out and get a small bit.

    Re: Eastman needs new strings

I bought Monels while I investigate the XS/XT difference. I'll probably try the XS on my other mandolin -- as soon as I put a strap button on it.

    Eastman needs new strings

So, I'm looking at all the D'Addario offerings on Just Strings. I used to use J74s or 75s, but I know they've changed the model numbers. Does anyone know the difference between the XS and XT strings...
  24. Strap for a Strad-ol-Lin? There's no strap button.

I inherited a nice old blonde Strad-o-lin A-style mandolin. Despite being factory mass-produced, it sounds a little better than my Eastman, except for an upper fret issue on the E string. That said,...
