    Re: Custom Gig Bags

I second Blue Heron. If its for a recent National guitar-shaped tenor, they made mine and its great.

    Re: The Weber Bridge (NFI)

I have a Weber bridge on one instrument and I have to say, the nut/wrench thing is a great innovation. Like the OP, I wonder why it has not quickly become the standard. Not saying that the knurled...

    Re: Love for Ovals

I much prefer ovals for my music (Irish trad) as well. The tonality suits the music better.

    Re: DeLuccia Two-Point Flatback 1930s

Potential buyers - note that in the top "eBay" part, it says returns are accepted but in the seller's description part its says all sales final.

    Re: Stradolin Dating Question

Totally agree. It seems like the single traverse bar makes them sound a bit more like an oval hole mandolin than many f hole mandolins. Anyway, I did one more search and found a veeeery faint date...

    Re: Stradolin Dating Question

Ah hah, now I get the "comma" description. Thanks all for that. And yes, this thing sounds very good for sure. I was going to sell one of them but now I am torn as to which one (if any) and will...

    Re: Stradolin Dating Question

It's 9 5/8" across. Does this one have what you are calling "comma shaped holes"? Does that just mean that the round holds are separated from the long curvy part of the hole?

    Re: Stradolin Dating Question

I picked up another Stradolin and am wondering if you folks can put an approximate date on it. No date stamp inside, elevated fingerboard, solid beautifully cross grained spruce top, Waverly tuners...

Re: How should one hold a tenor guitar (CGDA)?

I hold mine like a tenor banjo with no strap. It's a National resonator tenor (newish) so the body is small. When I used to have a larger body tenor (000 size), that position is uncomfortable.

    Re: Banjolin or Tenor Banjo?

Strong vote against mandolin banjo (great for some kinds of music but not Irish), strong vote for National RM1 with light strings (10-38 or so).

    Re: Stradolin Dating Question

Yes, but now I can dream that it saw battle in WWII and bullet broke off the lamination! I'll leave it as is for history sake. Some new owner can put an armrest on it if they choose. I am surprised...

    Re: Stradolin Dating Question

Thanks NickR but they were thoroughly rusted, teeth on the gears broken, knobs nasty - I would not think they would be usable by anyone, otherwise I would have kept them.

    Re: Stradolin Dating Question

I should also add that, while the mandolin plays great and sounds rather nice, my favorite part is that apparently some previous owner was a machinist and had machinst's letter punches. They used...

    Re: Stradolin Dating Question

Absolutely sure of the laminated top - I had to glue some of the remaining pieces down, see this pic.

Yes, the footprints look like Kluson to me. I had thought that laminated back and top meant 50's but you are thinking 40's?

    Re: Stradolin Dating Question

Any idea of the year of this Stradolin? I have looked high and low for the date inside, up by the neck on the inside of the back and its just not there. Definitely laminated all over. Tuners are...

  22. Irish mandolin and tenor banjo workshop in Houston Texas

Ireland's amazing Theresa O'Grady is one of the teachers at the Gulf Coast Cruinniu, in Houston, Tx, the first weekend in June. Check it out! https://gulfcoastirish.org/
  23. Re: Very pretty tuners had to be put on upside down 😭 (Gibson A)

On the underside of the plate, they have the typical Waverly Musical Products New York engraving. Thanks for the info! Is there a name for that spacing? I guess no modern replacement tuners are...
  24. Re: Very pretty tuners had to be put on upside down 😭 (Gibson A)

Mike, where did that middle picture come from and do you have any info on those tuners? I have a 1932 mandolin made by Paramount with those exact tuners on it and they are indeed midway between the...
