    Re: Memorizing a song

I memorize the melody first, then the harmonic structure. Learning the form is part of learning the melody. That's what works for me, but I surely wish i could memorize the harmony without the...
  2. Re: Looking for thoughts and opinions about a bowel back mandolin

I've never owned a bowel back, but they must be very hard to keep clean.

    Re: Refretting a Gibson A

Yes, and what do you think about putting the 80/40 on that 13" scale? I think that's what I want.

Re: Key of the song based on the melody

There's more than one right answer. The first thing to learn, I think, is just the modes of the major scale. You can learn how they apply to different situations later, but a dorian scale will always...

Re: Learning mandolin and music theory?

Another yay for mandolessons.com Great stuff!

But I don't understand why musicians are so resistant to learning theory. Of course you can play without it, but it just seems natural to me to want...

Re: Learning mandolin and music theory?

    I haven't seen Don Julin's book, but I'm sure it's great.

This one is too, if you can find a copy. https://www.amazon.com/Theory-Modern-Mandolin-Thomas-Ohmsen/dp/B0006ED1HY
  12. Re: Article: Weber Announces Pause in Mandolin Manufacturing

I don't doubt you, but then why are they focusing on guitars when they can sell all they build of either?

Re: Key of the song based on the melody

Technically, the key signature does determine the key, but practically all american musics that are based on dance music of the british isles or blues or a combination of the two are exceptions that...

    Re: Kentucky KM900 strings

Mine came with J74s. It's a bluegrass mandolin, built to sound like a gibson, why wouldn't it stand up to bluegrass strings?

    Re: Chord Questions

Although those are the "named" inversions, any order other than 135 (7 9 11 13) is an inversion.
