    Re: Blue Bayou

I used to play this pretty often at my Italian restaurant gig. Solo mandolin, all instrumental, mostly Italian tunes ... but this was the bartender's favorite song, so I worked it up for her. Lots of...
  2. Re: Looking for thoughts and opinions about a bowel back mandolin

I think that, as long as the top is flush with the bowel back, it'll be OK. Watch out for it in case it starts to sink, though. And remember to wipe it down after every use.

    OK, now that I've got...

Re: Nice Looking F4 at Music Folk

Thanks! I'm getting more comfortable with her, being careful not to do any damage but not so timid as to leave the notes within rather than bring them out. I've been practicing up my Italian mandolin...

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

It sure looks like it's been through ... something. I was thinking it could have undergone some internal combustion caused by a short or something, like when someone installed that pickup. ;) But...
  7. Re: What’s the oddest mandolin related gift you’ve been given?

A set of Argentine strings - I use D'Addario J74s exclusively (except on the mandola, of course, and the electric, nickel wound).

OK, not so weird. But I can't think of any other time I've been...

    Re: Don Williams

Seems Danny Flowers played guitar in Don Williams' band, and might well have switched off on mandolin now and then - like here.

Here's an article that goes into a bit of history on the song, and...

See? I knew you'd take it in the spirit of fun with which 'twas intended. ;)

    Re: Battle of Evermore

This is one of those songs that has been in the figurative background for a long time - hearing it a fair amount but never playing it so I thought I knew it, more or less, pretty much. Then one day I...

Yeah, over 100 views and no replies ... That deafening roar of responses you don't hear is indicative of the level of interest here. :( I know only one other guy here who's ventured into this area,...

    Re: Don Williams

'Scuse me, pardner, but "Tulsa Time" is not a J.J. Cale song. It was written by Danny Flowers. Don Williams recorded it, had a decent hit with it, then it was covered by Eric Clapton. I believe you...

    :))

Note to folks videoing such like: don't stand so close to the banjo - or fiddle, to a lesser extent - or else this is what you'll get. :crying:

I don't love banjo, but I do love...

    Re: adding a pickup to a 1927 gibson A

What I have on both of mine is a Fishman bridge attached to a 1/4" endpin jack. Yes, it means a bit of drilling, but the result is a sturdy installation of the industry standard for cables. No...

    Re: Don Williams

Ah yes, "The Gentle Giant." Not sure if he's one of the all-time greats, but just about every single was a good song, well-done. His music's easygoing style was so pleasant to hear, yet may have...

Re: Nice Looking F4 at Music Folk

Thanks, Charlie. I can't really answer that. I've only ever played one other before, which is Dave Reiner's, and I can't remember whether it was an F-4 or F-2, nor its vintage. It was not a baseball...

Never mind who's what. Sam Bush from 2:40 - 3:20, then Holy Mother of Pearl, Bela freakin' Fleck! :disbelief: Good luck anyone following that! :mandosmiley:

Re: Nice Looking F4 at Music Folk

I actually prefer the sound of phosphor bronze strings once the newness wears off a bit. They're a bit brash at first.

Not long ago another brand got touted a good bit - DR. I've been loyal to...

You seem to have missed my point. Didn't want to come right out and say it, but I really dislike misinformation and misinterpretation, and I don't want to be a party to any such. So I'll be blunt. I...

    Re: Beatles tunes

I thoroughly agree. It's one of Paul's most inspired works. Melody, chords, arrangement. I used to think the way their version ended with a minor > major switch was a cop-out, but I've learned a few...

I've been easing into playing her; she's sounding better all the time. I'm not used to playing an instrument of this quality. I'm a bit reserved, but I'm getting more comfortable the more I play. The...
