    Re: Mandolin Gift Suggestions

I'd go with a wooden string winder for mandolin - plenty of nice looking ones and is a must for all mandolinist. I know The Mandolin Store sells some, but you can search for a lot of varieties - all...

Re: Anyone else have no players near them?

I've tried Jamkazam but my delay was longer than that (I didn't have a hard ethernet connection, just Wi-Fi which was part of it). I have another buddy that swears by it - but says the closer...

Re: Anyone else have no players near them?

My suggestion would be to find bluegrass music playing in your area and talk with the bands / venue. They may provide some local-ish jams to attend etc.

That said, driving 30 minutes minimum one...
  5. Re: Is there an easy way to convert TAB to notation?

Personally I've been loving MuseScore for writing out tabs and notation. It's pretty easy to use and easy to convert to different keys and instruments (tab) - even can have multiple instruments...

Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

    TL;DR Answer
    The rule I follow is:
    1. 1st finger fret 1 and 2, 2nd, fret 3 and 4, 3rd fret 5 and 6, and 5th fret 7 and 8. This can be shifted up the neck as needed (so if starting on the 5th...

    Re: Electric mandolin.

Fairly sure you're not accurate here. A preamp is designed to increase gain (what I referred to as boosting the signal) to boost to line level. That is the main purpose of preamps. Gain doesn't...

    Re: Electric mandolin.

TL;DR - focus on the tone you want from the mandolin alone first, then worry about the tone shaping pedals etc after. Given your choices - the question is do you want a good sound acoustic...

    Re: Electric mandolin.

I got the Gibson F9 from the Mandolin Store https://themandolinstore.com/ - these are about $3k - $4k plus the pickup and installation

    Re: Electric mandolin.

    Thanks :)

Primarily I use a 2018 Newson with a Twin K pickup installed. My backup is a 2014 Gibson F9 also with a Twin K installed. Whenever I play plugged in, I use a Fishman Loudbox as the...

    Re: Electric mandolin.

I assume the Ortega has an active pickup given the installed electronics on it. If that's the case, that might be the best of both worlds. Likely sounds better unplugged than the Godin A8 since it...

Personally, I would suggest the Eastman of the one's you listed. Though note that Eastman's can vary a lot from one mandolin to another in the same class - so if possible, I'd suggest playing a few...

Re: only been playing a short while

Congrats on getting into mandolin! A few tips:

    1. Fiddle Tunes. The best way to work on your left hand is by learning fiddle tunes. Pick a few easier ones to start with and learn the melody and...

Re: Should a beginner buy electric mandolin?

    Re: Bluegrass Tunes with 6 2 5 1 progression

Diatonically, sure but technically speaking, saying "5 of 5 of 5, to the 5 of 5, to the 5 to the 1" is just a complicated way of say "major 6 2 5 1".

    Bluegrass Tunes with 6 2 5 1 progression

    Hey everyone :)

    So I'm looking around to find bluegrass standards or "new standards" that have a 6 2 5 1 change in them. I know Salty Dog Blues is basically a 1 6 2 5 1 song (G E A D G) and I...
