  1. Re: What are some of the best Mandolins that you all have played?

I like these posts as it sparks my flagging memory. Shaun mentioning that classical Gilchrist is a prime example, that mandolin was perfect in every way. The best I've ever played was Crusher at...
  2. Re: Artist/Album Recommendations like Punch Brothers & Sierra Hul

Look for the recordings by Milkdrive. They're no longer together, but their recordings are phenomenal. Another band unfortunately not still together was The Greencards that featured Kym Warner on...

    Re: Monteleones at Rudy’s

Seems like that Liz Taylor Monte was up for sale about 5 years ago for less than half that price.

Re: Best way to test preamp sounds at home?

There's two different areas of testing here. Getting the best sound out of your plugged in instrument and getting the best sound in a room. Testing through your amp is a great way to find what EQ...

    Re: Speakers/Monitors (no mando content)

Dave nails it. The horizontal throw really changes how the QSCs react in each environment. My band used K10's on stands as mains and K8s as monitors. It was a great setup and really filled the...

    Re: Demonstrating a mandolin

Yes, the video is there. But, the video is unlisted which means you have to have a direct link to view it. It won't show up in a search.

Nice one Don. Not sure if you're aware that video shows up as unlisted.

Re: Does anyone recognize this strap?

It looks little like an older Sully's Strap. https://sullysstraps.com/ But, there are a lot of folks that build straps using old tack.

Re: Natural / Blonde Gibson F5s?

Yes, a very good friend of mine has an L5 with the staples. To be honest, I never really tried the bridge pickup. I loved the sound of the neck only for jazz and comping.

  12. Re: Radial Tonebone PZ-Pro vs. EBS Stanley Clarke preamp pedals

I've always been super pleased with the Radial products and I'm certain the PZ Pro is good bit of kit. If it had been available when I bought my Felix, I likely would have gone that way. The...
  13. Re: Violinists: What are the mellow/smooth violin strings? (Nmc)

As others have stated, look for synthetic core strings. I'm also a Pirastro purist, but I play around with their sets periodically. I play a bit of everything but focus more on swing and jazz these...
  14. Re: Learning a Ronnie McCoury solo everyday for the month of Janu

YES! That lick to the key change is a hoot.
  15. Re: Just Bought a Grace Designs Alix...Give me Advice!

That's great to hear. I've been using the Felix for a while and love the sound I get.

Re: Simply Bluegrass - Full Episode 1

Love that they started off with the Whites. As a kid, that was my introduction to Ricky Skaggs at the Hugo, Ok bluegrass festival. Being a little kid fiddler, I was instantly drawn to his playing...
  17. Re: Learning a Ronnie McCoury solo everyday for the month of Janu

Oh, that's a cool break on that tune I hadn't heard. I've always admired the break on IIIrd Tyme Out's version. I think it's Alan Bibey on it.

Re: Monster sound on this mando

He does have a great sound through the PA. I saw them in Houston and was blown away by how good their sound was. Each instrument was handled superbly and the vocals were always balanced.

Re: Electric amps with acoustic mandos

To get the breakup sound, the tube amp is the way to go. I love my Princeton clone with a 12" speaker, I can still get solid lows and the top end sparkles.
  20. Re: Learning a Ronnie McCoury solo everyday for the month of Janu

I think I've said it before, but I'm happy to hear that mandolin in the hands of someone who can do it justice. Being a Houston native, there has been a lot of discussion of where that mandolin...
  21. Re: Paul Glasse on video w/Western Swing band 2023

Spectacular band. Joey's rhythm is next level and who doesn't love Redd's playing? So good.
  22. Re: Learning a Ronnie McCoury solo everyday for the month of Janu

I really feel like you're missing an opportunity to add another Gilchrist to the stable. These really should be played on an early S hole model, preferably in the red-burst.

    Re: Phantom power DI box?

You can get the two instrument RedEye and use the second channel effectively as a mute.
  25. Re: Jake Jolliff & Mike Barnett - Wheel Hoss

So great to see Mike and Jacob taking things as far out as they can and then reeling it back to the tune. I miss Mike's fiddling, such a unique voice.
