    Re: Beware the mighty doubleneck

Several years ago I bought a double neck mandolin and guitar that somebody in Oregon built. I couldn't get rid of that bad boy fast enough. This is probably a better instrument than that was :)
  2. Re: Vega cylinderback with no logo ... made for the trade?

Unfortunately that happens at times when there is a generational change in ownership. It pretty much doomed Mandolin Brothers because Stan was a larger than life walking encyclopedia of knowledge. It...

    Re: Wood ID

Repurposing furniture into musical instruments is a long and proud tradition :)

Orville Gibson was known to do it.

For anyone that might be interested the mandolin was made by Kay in Chicago.
  9. Re: Stan Jay, Pioneer of Vintage Instrument Fame Fighting For His

I didn't get there that early but I was there when every instrument type had it's own little bedroom. I picked up a banjo and strummed it and was amazed at how live it was. I soon realized that every...

Re: Thile using an SM57 mic

I never really gave that much thought until just now. They sold those same Mics for years and I don't remember ever having one go bad. I'm sure they did just none that were in my control. They had...

    Re: H1 Mandola tailpiece

If you'd like to keep the original you could remove the tailpiece base and use a jewelers saw to make two cuts farther down to create a new prong. They don't have to be the same lengths.
