Re: NMD (sorta) - Eastman MD-605

As others have pointed out, yes! This video explains the whole thing well: https://youtu.be/peNqlzd8giY?si=ryjuLl_m6Jws_gHr

    NMD (sorta) - Eastman MD-605

The last few weeks have been quite eventful - I initially acquired an Eastman MD-305, which I eventually decided to let go on account that it sounded harsh to my ears.

    As luck would have it,...

    Re: Mandolin Dead Zone

Congrats on your new mando! I have D’Addario on my Eastman and GHS on the Big Muddy. They are very different mandolins, but all things considered I think I like GHS a bit better.

    Re: Mandolin Dead Zone

I used to live in New England and distances are not that big :-)… driving from central Connecticut to Boston should take ~2h, NYC even less. I am sure you can find good options there.

    A warning...

    Re: new trend?

My 2c: I have been in this community for ~1 year and one of the things I like about it is that people don't mind restarting old threads (although I have never done it myself).

    I have been on the...

    Alternatives to EJ-74

I am all out of strings, which is a condition I don't like. I am mulling a bulk order of strings.

I recently acquired an Eastman and I put EJ-74 on it, as those are the ones that are easiest to...

Re: Mid tier Mando that will hold its value

I was having a chat with a luthier in town and we agreed that Eastman has kind of cornered the mid-range market (at least here in Canada). They are a lot of bang for the bucks and pretty nice to...

I have, quite literally, blood on my hands

The other night I was putting new strings on my mandolin, when I nicked my finger without noticing it. Once done, I realized my hands (and presumably the strings) were all splattered in blood. Ouch!...

    Re: Overthinking tone

Funny you should mention it, I have a planned trip to Italy next year and I am mulling looking for a resonably-priced bowlback once I am there, just to add some variety :-)

    Re: Overthinking tone

Thank everyone for the advice (and the prodding), I've learned a bunch from this thread.

To be clear, I did not mean to sound like I am "above" the Eastman. I am just not crazy about how it...

    Re: First Post

I sympathize with the feeling! I dropped music for ~15 years, but I got back into it when I randomly got my hands on a mandolin. It's a fascinating instrument.

I have been around for one year and...

    Overthinking tone

    Hi all,

I recently acquired an Eastman MD-305 as I was looking for an instrument appropriate for bluegrass. I went into a reputable local store, tried a bunch of Eastmans and Kentuckys, and walked...

Re: Shane MacGowan has passed (NMC)

I was surprised nobody had mentioned Shane’s passing, then I realized I had missed this thread.

I discovered the Pogues a few years ago listening to internet radio and they have been in my regular...

    Re: Transitioning to a Bowlback

LOL accordion music on the mandolin? That’s a first :-)

Also, thank you for bringing this up. I was surprised that a lot of people in this thread seem to think of bowlbacks as a thing of the past....
  17. Re: The Airline lost my mandolin! (Good news ending though)

I have accepted to lose a few days of practice every time I travel, because I am too scared of something like this happening.

I am an amateur beginner player, so it is not a big deal for me, but I...

Re: Mia Mandolins in Greenbrier, Arkansas.

I really like the way they look. It is nice to see a builder trying to do something different. It would be interesting to see how they compare to other domestic builders in this price range such as...

My success story this year is getting refrigerator filters for about $5 off. This is in line with the expectations I have now for black friday :-)

  21. Re: Any others here that started their mandolin/instrument later

I started playing the mandolin shortly after I turned 40 :-)

Now, I did play some guitar in my 20s, which made a bunch of things easier. But that was a long time ago...

Re: What to look for when buying used

Thanks everyone for the advice. One question I have is how "budget-friendly" domestic builders compare to import brands such as Eastman.

I understand that for many people is important to own a...

    Re: Upgrade Fever

It is hard to determine whether your mandolin is holding you back, until you try a better one. I started on a $100 mandolin off Amazon and I couldn’t even form basic chords, and that was after...
