  1. Re: Just Bought a Grace Designs Alix...Give me Advice!

Finally playing around with the Alix a bit more. Played numerous gigs with it so far and really do love it, but also haven't done much with it in terms of settings either. Ethan, could you elaborate...

    Re: What eq?

Been playing around with EQ settings on my ALIX...despite being 14 years old, this thread offers some really useful info on the dynamic range of mandolins and how that corresponds to EQ settings.
  3. Re: Stephen Perry updates, shop running again, located N. Va.

Damn, wish I'd known about this earlier myself. I had some extensive set-up work I needed done over Christmas. I drove nearly an hour to Stuart Orser out near Brunswick. Stu did an outstanding job,...

    Re: Arthritis

Perhaps it somehow affects you differently, but, by-and-large, Ibuprofen is most likely to harm the kidneys and stomach if taken incorrectly. Generally speaking, NSAIDs rarely affect the liver....
  5. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

Totally agree. What does A+++ even mean? Are we grading baseball cards here?
  6. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

No, I do not think the consensus is that one out of every ten Kentucky KM350s sounds as good as a Monteleone. I don't think the consensus is that 1 out of every 100 Eastman MD305s sounds as good as a...

    Re: playing late and drinking

To answer the question...yes, my playing does sometimes improve after a drink or two...but there is absolutely a point of diminishing returns, and by the time I reach it, the returns are often well...
  9. Re: Just Bought a Grace Designs Alix...Give me Advice!

Just wanted to say I've now played a few gigs with it and done very little with it other than adjust the EQ a bit to my preference and it still sounds terrific. I'll keep the Red Eye as a back-up,...

    Re: Reverb Pedals?

If my band would ever make the switch from our decades-old analog board to my virtual board, that would be an option :))

    Re: Reverb Pedals?

At some point I need to play around with a HOF. I see them on a LOT of band's boards. It is arguably THE iconic reverb pedals.

    Reverb Pedals?

For those who've gone down the rabbit hole of DI'd mandos and pedals...reverbs seem like the most common effects pedal. Just curious to see what other folks use, why they use them, and how they use...

Re: Tonedevil FM product feedback requests

Ugly headstock and the scroll looks clunky. F5 mandolins already are headstock heavy and that thing looks even larger, and likely heavier, than a normal F5 headstock.. That being said, I'm a...

    Re: DI for K&K pickup?

Just my $.02, but everyone I know who has a Baggs Venue says the tuner is shit and usually runs a separate tuner.

As far as the impedance "mismatch" between the Baggs and a K&K, I've seen several...

    Re: DI for K&K pickup?

I've used a RedEye for years and really liked it. Recently got an Alix and love it. The RedEye will be my back-up from now on. Much stronger boost and I love having the tone controls at my feet....

    Studying Sam Bush

I've been thinking that I'd love to spend some time studying Sam's playing more in 2024. Aside from just listening and trying to work out some of the things he does, are there any good resources out...

Re: Carter Vintage relocating, Part 2

We have plans to be in Nashville in May 2024. I know it's a ways off, but does anyone have any ideas as to whether this will impact whether they are open in May of next year? Not gonna lie, from what...
  20. Re: Heiden's....the most expensive modern mandolin builder?

As always, it depends on your own finances and how much a dollar is worth to you. Those prices are over half my yearly salary, before taxes. No instrument is worth that kind of money to someone in my...

    Re: Thinking Of Altering Mando

I don't think it would impact the value one bit. Maybe the speed neck would, but as long as the Florida is scooped so that it looks good then I can't see that being an issue. Lots of mandos are built...

Re: New Album/Single by Sarah Jarosz

It's kind've hard to overstate the impact Phoebe Bridgers has had on rock music in the last 3-4 years. She had a dedicated, but still somewhat underground, fanbase going into her second album,...

I hate them. Shrill and metallic is exactly how I'd characterize them, and I don't think they improve, at least not in a week or so I used them. That said, every mando is different and responds in...

Re: New Album/Single by Sarah Jarosz

I dig it, but I listen to as much rock music as I do bluegrass. Sounds like it would fit in nicely on a Phoebe Bridgers albums, or any of the Bridgers-adjacent albums, and for me at least, that's not...
