Re: Jade mandolin with a strangely shaped top

I followed the Jade story from start to finish here and was sad to see it end. I got to play a couple of them years ago and would’ve been happy to own one. I always think it’s fascinating how...

    Re: Cheap D'Angelico F-Style mandolin - what?

That's a cool mandolin: sort of reminds me of the very plain "Fullerton" F-style that came and went very quickly a few years ago. They got great scores from the people lucky enough to have bought...

Re: Reverb to start collecting tax IDs

I buy and sell a lot of big stuff, not just instruments, and it's always local via CL, Nextdoor, etc, mostly because shipping and packing is such a hassle. There has never been a better time for it...

    Re: The cure for MAS

I do this every now and then when I think I want a new guitar. I always end up liking my guitar better than anything else I play in the store.

Re: Blues on the Mandolin - Let's Hear Ya!

Mark, thank you! I like it a lot, and like any other idea it just seemed to come out of nowhere one day (Who can tell where an idea or a tune comes from?). I don't have any sheet music for it...

Probably not exactly what you had in mind, but here is an original tune I came up with a while back that I call "End of Summer Blues." I think it's pretty catchy.

Re: Price increases coming soon or already here

I have made a handful of stops into my local GC in the last couple years for strings, etc. Each time I've noticed fewer guitars on the wall than I've seen in 30 years. Yesterday my local GC was...
  9. Re: What Irish/Scottish music do Irish/Scottish people listen to?

Just wanted to chime back in and say what a great week it was dabbling in these new (to me) podcasts. I listened to several episodes of Irish Music Stories (this is a VERY well-produced show!) and...

Re: Do you name your instruments?

I've never named a guitar but I did name my mandolin. I call it 'Sting' after Bilbo and Frodo's short sword from THE LORD OF THE RINGS. I had Bruce Weber make me a custom truss rod cover. I love it.
  11. Re: What Irish/Scottish music do Irish/Scottish people listen to?

Thanks so much for this! I’ve added it to my podcast queue.

Lots more recommendations here to check out. Thank you.

  13. Re: What Irish/Scottish music do Irish/Scottish people listen to?

I'm also drawn to airs and slower stuff over the faster tunes. That's convenient for me as a player because I usually can't play fast tunes very well either.
  14. Re: What Irish/Scottish music do Irish/Scottish people listen to?

Quiet morning here at home and I've been listening to a bit of Duncan Chisholm, someone I was unfamiliar with until this discussion. Thank you for that, Dagger, mandrian, et al. I also took some...
  15. Re: What Irish/Scottish music do Irish/Scottish people listen to?

Thanks for taking the time to look these up and post them. I listened to them all and really enjoyed "I'm a Rover" the best. The simplicity of the arrangement and the catchy melody are great. I...
  16. Re: What Irish/Scottish music do Irish/Scottish people listen to?

I have some CDs of O’Carlolan music that I enjoy, but when I venture off into “Celtic” or “Irish” (etc) songs it’s always via Tidal (similar to Spotify et al). Most collections start off good but...
  17. What Irish/Scottish music do Irish/Scottish people listen to?

I’ve tried countless Irish and “Celtic” music collections and they are usually pretty bad. I figure most of these recordings are made for and sold to people outside the region. This got me...

    Re: Obscure, solid Mandolin Players

When our oldest boy (now 21) was little, he watched a lot of kids programming and I remember seeing Dan Zanes on sometimes between shows. The songs were always catchy and good songs on their own,...

Re: New Eastman won't stay in tune - bad pegs?

I once had an Eastman 505 with Schaller tuners. They were VERY smooth and that particular instrument held tune better than any instrument I've ever owned. In fact, it was my favorite thing about...

Very cool. I am a serious postcard geek and always look for them in gift shops, etc. when traveling. Who doesn't love getting mail?

    Re: Encouragement is magic

This reminds me of once when I was camping in a state park with my family. It was in the middle of the afternoon and I was sitting around playing O'Carolan tunes. A couple of ladies walk by and...

Re: Can I get more JazzMando picks?

I ordered some Jazzmando strings about 15 yrs ago when I started mandolin. There was a Jazzmando pick in the order and I've been using that pick off and on since then (the logo has long since been...

Re: Eastman 515V vs Collings MT

I know a guy with an older 515, from back when Eastman first started making mandolins. It sounds about as good as anything in any price range. There are gems out there.

    Re: New Chris Thile album

I love some of Thile’s early solo stuff, and the early Nickel Creek records are some of the best acoustic music I’ve ever heard. I guess my taste must be of the plainer sort, because the current...
