    Re: Jessamyn's Reel- Chris Thile

Wow awesome! Thank you! I've been playing this tune for awhile, but I realize I wasn't doing all the Thile-sliding properly, so this transcription is super helpful. Rad!
  2. Mandocello question: should I add strap button, and K&K pickup?

So, I have a K&K pickup in a used Collings MT2 via the tailpiece of that mandolin, and it's super fun. But reading about other people's eventual issues with such adhesive pickups (either the pickups...
  3. Any thoughts on Weber mandocellos? Anyone here played one?

I'm considering going for a Weber mandocello, but I am also considering a few other individual makers. Has anyone played Weber's mandocellos and have an opinion on them one way or another?

    I'm...
  4. where can I find a mandocello trapeze tailpiece?

I'm converting my classical guitar (yep) into a mandocello and all I need now is a trapeze tailpiece made for mandocello. Any suggestions where to find one? If I end up not being able to find one,...
  5. Re: Trying to find an introductory mandocello but having difficul

Hey guys, I'm undergoing an experiment: turning my old classical guitar into a mandocello. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

  6. Trying to find an introductory mandocello but having difficulty..

Heyall, I'm really interested in getting into the mandocello in addition to my mandolin playing, but I don't really have the cash right now to buy a used K-1 or K-2 or a new Weber or anything of that...
  7. Re: Oval-hole Gibson K-1 Mandocello, or F-holes Weber Mandocello?

Thanks Allen - my mother is from Rochester NY long long ago! My brother lives in NY now, so if I'm around anytime soon before I make a purchase - I'll definitely drop you a line and we can ham it up...
  8. Oval-hole Gibson K-1 Mandocello, or F-holes Weber Mandocello?

I'm debating! I really can't decide. I know that I like the focused sound of f-holes on mandolins, but perhaps a mandocello doesn't need to be as punchy as a mandolin? I mean, when does one need the...
  9. Why do all my mandolin bridges eventually lean forward?

I had a 915 Eastman a few years ago and in its middle-age the top part of the bridge was leaning so far forward that the screws were actually bent. Now I have a Collings MT and the top part of the...

Re: Who makes decent mandocellos today?

Wow thanks for all the information guys! So I'm looking at a K-1 Gibson right now (oval hole) and debating between that and a Weber Yellowstone Traditional (f-holes). Someone mentioned that the...

    Who makes decent mandocellos today?

I'm thinking of just finding an old Gibson K-1, but if I were to scout a new mandocello, who makes decent ones? I have no idea. Are the Weber mandocellos any good?

    Thanks guys,

    - J

What wood was used in the Lloyd Loar's?

What kind of wood is on the tops of the old Gibson A's and F's? Adirondack? Engelmann? Sitka?

    Tonegard and airport security

Has anyone had trouble putting their mandolin with tonegard on through the scanner and have security go, "what is this thing?" I can't imagine the tonegard would make them nervous, but I don't really...
  14. Re: How often should one get set-up? (Bridge question))

Yeah, it looks like the bridge could be a bit adjusted to fit the contour of the mando top. It doesn't look too serious, but I'll look into it. Thanks!

  15. Re: How often should one get set-up? (Bridge question))

Yeah, I guess it is two different issues.

    A) how often does one get their mando professionally "set-up"?

    and,

    B) is it ok if your bridge, over time, heels into the finish a bit. Nothing's...
  16. How often should one get set-up? (Bridge question))

In particular, how often should one have their bridge adjusted? I had my Eastman (when I owned an Eastman) setup about 2 years after a bought it, and the bridge had slightly dug into the face of the...
  17. Re: Is it ok if my tonegard presses my bridge up?

Tennis bag eh - interesting. I like that idea.

I just measured my MT with the tonegard on, it's pretty much exactly 4-inches tall, and the hard ceiling to bottom of my TKL case is about...
  18. Re: Is it ok if my tonegard presses my bridge up?

Hmmm! Well, it sounds like removing the tone gard is the way to go... The tonegard website says to keep it on, so the metal brace bars don't get too loose from constantly adjusting it on and off....
  19. Is it ok if my tonegard presses my bridge up?

I have a Collings MT and a standard TKL case - and I know I've asked on this forum before whether it's to keep the tonegard on the MT in the TKL case - and many have said yeah! But I'm still...

Wegen pickers - how often do you replace?

If you replace at all, when does one replace a wegen for a new sharp one? I've been using the same white-140 for 3 years now, and it's definitely a bit more rounded, but I'm thinking I might like...
  21. Re: does a Tone Gard safely fit on an MT in its TKL case?

It seems like MT/TKL owners are ok with keeping their tone-gard on in the case. I just can't believe it though. My mando is so snug in there without the tone-gard. However, it doesn't seem to be...
  22. Re: does a Tone Gard safely fit on an MT in its TKL case?

Good to know guys - my friend who has an MF with a TKL case takes his off because he says his bridge pushes too much on the top of the case. But I didn't seem to have this problem with my MT and its...
  23. does a Tone Gard safely fit on an MT in its TKL case?

I tried it out, but I'm not sure I would want to do it all the time. Does anyone know for sure if you can keep your tone gard on a Collings MT in its standard TKL case? Or do you have to take the...
  24. Re: Are there tone guards made by any other company?

Ahh, yes, the balance issue is a good point. My mando could use a bit more weight down there. Oh well, crab-trap gard it is.
  25. Are there tone guards made by any other company?

Are there tone guard options out there other than "Tone-Gard"? I really want to get a tone guard for sure. And I know no one sees it, but I can't help thinking that fiddler's have those nicely...
