They said January.
Klos is doing preorders of a carbon fiber A style mandolin at about 50& off list. Options include a wider neck and unidirectional CF. I put in a preorder. Dave
So, I’ve played fingerstyle guitar for years and while I enjoy trying it on a mandolin, it makes me want a wide nut mandolin. Anybody play this style of fingerpicking and use a wide neck? ...
ThunderHawk baritone guitars are like that too. I’ve got one and it booms. They are massive in size and sound.
It's actually kept in tune pretty well. :) I'll see if I can pick out a fingerstyle melody on it and post it. :)
Just finished with this little guy. Crack in back sealed with liquid CA and then French Polished. Beautiful sound. Used one light gauge and two ultralight gauge strings in each course. Makes me...
Jeez, for a few dollars you can buy a bottle of Everclear, a jar of olive oil and a baggie of shellac, a few handkerchiefs, a bag of cotton batting, and have than enough to french polish a gorgeous...
Sigh. Not to get too sidetracked. I meant "vintage" as in older or antique. But not something being made in since about 1950
+1 to the AEA KU5a I've got one and it's a smooth, warm sound with low noise. Great for voice, guitar and mandolin.
Are there vintage mandolins to look for that have a bit more width than the standard? Coming from fingerstyle and classical guitar, it's just really a PITA to get used to the standard (for me)...
Wound up using 3x3mm and 3x1mm rods with a modified fan brace. The wood top was very thin, so I also put a triangular carbon fiber twill patch in the center of the soundboard, all glued down...
So, finishing things up. The top was really a pain, not only warped, but really thin. I wound up rebracing entirely with carbon fiber 3mm rods and added a triangular patch of Carbon Fiber twill in...
Thanks TOM. I’m giving a lot of thought to the bracing, since I’m gluing the soundboard cracks now, and bracing is next. I’m thinking of putting a spruce brace under the bridge or maybe a 3x3 cf...
That works with wood, but not if I experiment with carbon fiber. I’m going to try Vernon’s paper suggestion with a few CF braces.
Brilliant. Will try that. Thanks.
Thanks. You’re ignite, I’m listening to ideas and want to try something new. How do you create temporary bracing without glueing and ungluing that might damage the old soundboard ? Dave
Chicago is hard on guitars in the winter. I keep a couple of evaporative Airdog humidifiers running 24/7 in my condo to keep humidity above 40%. If you have a prized instrument, keep it in the...
Peter,
I think I may try your fan bracing, perhaps with a few 1mmx3mm rods. My old Washburn is now completely rigid at the neck, after gluing a thin, twill carbon fiber sheet around the...
Reviving this old thread…is there a particular sound quality or volume benefit from placing a lateral brace directly under the bridge, as opposed to placing braces above, below, or fanned...
Not sure of the model. So far, I’ve steamed the cracks and gotten the top straight, and put a piece of carbon fiber sheet around the oval hole, wrapping up to the top of the tail block, gluing it...
Guess I’ll find out when I get it. . Let y’all know.
I meant a couple of small popsicle sticks from the oval hole to the neck block area. But maybe I will just cut some extensions from the annular ring of CF sheet surrounding the hole , like the ears...
Thank you Dave. I will look that up. The soundboard on this old Washburn is very thin, so thin that the cracked areas I’m going to glue can move an inch up and down. Ideally, after...
Another winter restoration project. Guitar shaped 12 string mandolin with 3 string courses. I understand that not too many survive…too much string tension. I’m wondering whether it’s reasonable...
