  1. Re: "banjo-mandolin" and "nice sounding": an oxymoron?

Well I don't know if this has been mentioned, but it is a banjo and as such mandolin strings are way too heavy for a good sound. I use two sets of tenor banjo strings and the heaviest string is a 28....

Just for comparison, I played my Fishman mini along with someone playing thru the Mackie I referenced above and the Mackie was superior in sound quality. The Fishman was not bad, but the Mackie was...

I can't give you any general tonal changes that may occur, but I like what it did to my mandolin.

    Re: Small amplifier

These are nice, more of a PA so nice clear sound. If you don't need the mic input the XLR from your preamp works better anyway. You have either on both channels.

  6. Re: K&K Duotone with an Acoustic Tech21 Fly Rig?

I looked it up too, and K&K says to use the K&K preamp, which has a mono input. If the pickups are wired in stereo you would need two preamps and K&K does not mention anything about them being in...
  7. Re: K&K Duotone with an Acoustic Tech21 Fly Rig?

It comes with a stereo endpin jack to be used with another system. The pickups are not wired in stereo, and if used alone without another system a mono cord will work with the stereo endpin jack.

    Re: Transposing Notes

If you know your scales and play by ear, it won't take much to simply figure it out in G instead of A. It's a good practice and sometimes I just do it for fun.
  9. Re: K&K Duotone with an Acoustic Tech21 Fly Rig?

The K&K pickups are not wired in stereo, but are simply wired parallel. No special cord needed. I would look to your settings. I use a K&K with a RedEye, it only has a treble control. Sounds great. I...

I have fixed a couple of instruments for a friend of mine and he will tell me not to match anything, he wants to see that it is repaired to remind him to be more careful. So there is always that.

My mandolin came scooped, fortunately. I actually prefer the look of a scooped Florida.

Re: Help! Drowned out by fiddles!

If you have a sound person they should be able to have you in the monitor and mains so you can hear yourself and the audience can hear you. If they can't do that get a new sound person.

    Re: Pick orientation to strings

Don't worry about changing from how you hold the pick with guitar to mandolin. I have a friend who does the same thing on both guitar and mandolin. He is quite good and the angle is no problem...

Re: Help! Drowned out by fiddles!

I disagree with a heavier pick. A lighter pick will allow more highs and highs will carry better with less volume than lows. A heavier pick will allow you to maybe use more force, but I use a pick...

    Re: Gibson F9 2004

The pickup sounds like it is a transducer and will require a HiZ input in the PA, or a preamp to match impedance to sound it's best.

Re: Help! Drowned out by fiddles!

I was trying out someones mandolin, before the pandemic, at a jam, and when I played her mandolin it was way louder than when she played it. It may be some new technique may be in order. Yes a louder...

Re: Blue Chip pick for oval hole mandolin

I find I can really use any pick on my Gibson ('22 A2) oval and it sounds good. Even a thin pick keeps a good solid bass with warm highs. I feel these are much less fussy than ff hole mandolins.

+1 almost as accurate as the Peterson, lighter, smaller and cheaper. Especially if you use the strobe, the accuracy increases.

Re: Raising 12th fret, worth it?

If the ruler doesn't rock on the 13th fret when rocking on the 12-14th then it is not high. It may be as suggested a lower slot on the saddle???? Hard to see anything substantial in the pic.
  24. Re: Open Back / Old Time Banjos - Comparisons to Mando Builders

pheff, when they look thru the little slot to see who's knocking they will be able to see the mandolin nerd. You may need a disguise.

Re: Pick Noise, pointy vs rounded, etc.

If you want to glide thru the strings while doing a tremolo, angle your pick. The more you angle the quieter you are, even with more force. Learning tremolo most folks need more force and angling the...
