Re: High marks for Schaller GrandTunes

My mate Rab swears by them.
He wrote to Schaller requesting some tuner bits and pieces for a restoration he was doing and they were very helpful.

Re: High marks for Schaller GrandTunes

I agree. I just installed Schallers on my Red Diamond. They are smoother than the Waverly's I had on for a little bit. I ordered directly from Schaller in Germany and received them in just a couple...

Re: High marks for Schaller GrandTunes

Yes. I have a set I put on my Eastman mandocello to replace the ugly (but functional) OEM tuners. All the metal hardware on the 'cello was gold (except the tuners) and they had pearloid buttons...

Re: Can anyone ID these tuners, please.

The GA tuners which came on my GBOM were easy to sort. I simply took them off and threw them in the bin. Keith Robson made me a great replacement set but I don’t think he produces mandolin tuners...

Re: Can anyone ID these tuners, please.

You might try backing out the cog screws a bit. See if it frees them up.

Re: Can anyone ID these tuners, please.

A while back, if I recall, there were complaints about these and they were replaced by Stewmac. I have no idea if these are part of that batch. I seriously doubt there would be any way to know but...

    Yep, these: https://www.stewmac.com/parts-and-hardware/tuning-machines/mandolin-tuning-machines/golden-age-f-style-mandolin-tuners.html

You can see the imprint of the originals on yours which...

    Re: Intonation compensated saddle question

I am eager to hear what the experts have to say on this. It might be useful to post a close up photo of the bridge looking from above. How is the intonation on your D string?

Re: 1st fret playability on your mando?

Just came back from a refret/fingerboard leveling , 1st one in its 98 years .. so it's perfect.

Re: 1st fret playability on your mando?

This is a place where fingering technique can make a difference too. At those 1 and 2 frets, I really try to put the finger as close (or a little on) the fret. Further up the fretboard, it doesn't...

Re: 1st fret playability on your mando?

How do you know that the nut height is good? The nut slots are more commonly too high than actually correct. If it's hard to play in the first position, especially at the first fret, the nut is the...

Re: 1st fret playability on your mando?

Sounds to me as though the nut height is not as good as it might be. But adjustments need to be done with care, easy to go too low which then requires more effort to correct.

  18. Re: What if I removed the nitro finish from the sides of my mando

    I would use nitro.
French polished shellac is the only alternative I would even consider.
In most cases, I avoid touch up or refinish with anything but the medium originally used.

    Anything else...
  19. Re: What if I removed the nitro finish from the sides of my mando

Also far from expert at finishing, but I've used oil finish as simple touch-up on various items, if not better-quality instruments. My understanding here is that the oil will not and, preferably,...
  20. Re: What if I removed the nitro finish from the sides of my mando

Myself....I'd just leave it alone and let it be. Especially if I was the original owner (that is way cool all by itself!). And I'd be darn proud of it. YMMV.
  21. Re: What if I removed the nitro finish from the sides of my mando

I guess fashion and the market determine what’s proper and what destroys value. Extreme in the antique furniture world, where a crazed and dirty finish is vital to resale. Less so with paintings,...
  22. Re: What if I removed the nitro finish from the sides of my mando

A question for those who know, NOT a suggestion. If the OP peels off the nitro, could he then apply Tru-Oil on the sides for protection? If protection is the goal, and re-finish isn't in the cards,...
  23. Re: What if I removed the nitro finish from the sides of my mando

It doesn't really bother me. It just looks like an old, worn mandolin. Hard to say if removing the flaking would look better or not. Short of a complete refinish, I'd probably just leave it alone.

I would just plane top 1/16" off the saddle and glue (with CA) one long strip of new ebony and reshape to match the shape of compensations (any small remnants of slots would be filled by CA glue when...

    Re: Minimum saddle height?

    Alternatives would be to:

    1. Fill the slots with superglue and ebony dust, then re-cut.
    2. Order a new saddle from Axiom Inc.
    3. If it is badly messed up and you don't want to replace the...
