  1. Re: Shove that Pigs Foot a Little Farther into the Fire

I love that tune, glad you tackled it and had so much fun with it Gunnar
  2. Re: Does this guitar speed picking technique work for mando?

One final note: If you want to practice DUDDUD I’d suggest taking a good jig, maybe a very well known one like Irish Washerwoman and start slowly then bring it up to speed once you’re used to playing...
  3. Re: Does this guitar speed picking technique work for mando?

A 6/8 jig has a rhythm analogous to two downbeats triplets. A 12/8 one has a rhythm analogous to 4 down beat triplets. DUDDUD puts a downstroke on each of the perceived downbeats, as does...
  4. Re: Does this guitar speed picking technique work for mando?

“Does it matter?” Maybe not to you, you decide.

    Re: Free Mandolin Tabs

I disagree, these are not tablature, they’re a handful of lyric sheets and the site is laden with ads …
  6. Re: Is there an easy way to convert TAB to notation?

I don’t think that they meant that Tablature is “last century”, I believe that the reference was to writing tablature in ASCII format.

  8. Re: Unwanted string noises with mandolin and mandola

Yes, there is nothing at all wrong with what you described, Knoppa, the first paragraph of my first response in this thread resulted from my own misunderstanding of what you wrote. I read through...

    Re: Learning to read Rhythm

    How esoteric of you

I agree that is fascinating, but I think this discussion is centered around reading rhythm in Western music of the common era.

    Re: Learning to read Rhythm

Another thing, by rhythm, do you mean the melody note values in relation to the timing of the piece? The general groove of the music? Or the rhythmic accompaniment for the melody?

    What sort of...

    Re: Learning to read Rhythm

I think you’re expressing a dichotomy of recordings & video vs. Notation, which is fine enough, I suppose, but feeling & internalising rhythm by hearing and watching doesn’t demand the existence of...

    Re: Learning to read Rhythm

    Those are great, Jeff

    Some thoughts on OP …

There’s a bit of a distinction between playing rhythm as opposed to playing lead with stringed instruments, playing rhythm usually meaning to Comp or...

Re: How many Mandolins to own

The answer depends on how much room do you have?

The mathematical equation goes like this: If the current number of mandolins you own = x, then the optimum number of mandolins for you is x + p,...

Re: Blues on the Mandolin - Let's Hear Ya!

Kevin, where I’m living now, internet is spotty, plus I’m lazy … I’ve been immersed in the blues recently and hopefully will find time to post new stuff; in the meantime here are a few I put up in...

Re: Any good RH technique resources?

Yes, hundreds of books & videos … and mandolin cafe threads. Search YouTube, for example, or here.
  22. Re: Unwanted string noises with mandolin and mandola

Palm muting technique on guitar as you describe (muting bass strings & plucking melody on treble strings with fingers) is not done for the purpose you stated, it is done for the thumping bass effect...
  23. Re: Electric Blues on Mandolin - Farther Up the Road

Well this was inspiration Kevin, I’ve been doing blues on Mandolin in Several keys, A, E, C, G … this morning you sent me to the key of D and been having a blast with it :)
