If you enjoy old-time mandolin playing, I highly recommend following Daniel on instagram. He posts a lot of great videos of himself playing old-time standards solo....
A lot of classifieds ads don't specify if a trial period is offered, but if you ask most sellers are usually happy to offer it.
Strumming might be apt in one of the OT jams, which, from my limited experience, is usually lacking any sort of rhythm section.
I believe that is this mandolin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU5iOXitlno
1. Agree ahead of time on terms before sending instruments. What happens if someone doesn't like the instrument they received? Who is responsible for shipping and insurance in such a scenario? etc.

Thanks for sharing! When Matt advertised the upcoming Vermont Mandolin Trio performances on Instagram, I was hoping there would be a recording.
I like to stick my boveda humidipak under the string, behind the bridge, which fills no additional volume within the case. Is the D'addario humidipak small enough to fit there?
FWIW my perception of Northfield has always been that they were direct competitors with Collings, Pava, (and Weber?). Northfield’s magic is that their instruments sound just as good, but they’re able...
Northfield has instructions on how to best use the Boveda Humipaks for their [oval hole] octaves: https://www.northfieldinstruments.com/store/boveda-humidity-control. I imagine the recommendation...
IME selling a mandolin usually consumes very little time. Snapping photos, posting a couple online ads, recording a minute long audio sample, responding to inquiries, accepting digital payments, and...

It's not red like Ronnie's though...
At the price point of $65, I am not expecting an extensive seminar/workshop schedule. If that's your main interest, Mandolin Camp North and Fiddle Hell are likely to be of more interest.
My data is anecdotal, so I could be wrong, but I believe in recent memory teens Gibson A models have not kept up with inflation, so they haven't kept their value.
From that perspective, it's...
Assuming the mandolin was in excellent condition and all/most parts original, that price tracks with other teen Gibson F4s that have sold through premium retailers over the last year.
If buying...
Both the mando and the playing sound great! I don’t know too much about Wyatt, but from what I’ve gathered from online posts and videos I see pop up, David Harvey has been a mentor of his, hence his...
Not a duet, but I'd still recommend checking out George Jackson's album "Time and Place", which is an old time album of original compositions with Andrew Marlin on mandolin, often times doubling the...
I agree with posters above that 3 is brighter than 2 and 2 brighter than 1. But fuller? Not to my ear. I preferred pick 1, as it sounded the roundest and darkest. 3 was tinny and piercing.
Many people (including many professional mandolinists) swear by a tone guard.
It's surprising to me that the one at Elderly is still for sale.
Jim, I would love to hear your Heiden. Have you ever made available recordings of it?
I think this is still largely an open research problem.
I do remember coming across a product that was developed by a person who did their PhD on the topic. It was actually pretty good, but I...
I've had the good fortunate of spending considerable time with a number of Gils, one Monteleone, and a few Heidens. Without a doubt, Heidens are in the same tier.
Tone is a subjective matter, but...
I've not played a mandolin finer than a Heiden. Can't recommend one enough.
If you're eyeing the one at TME, I had the pleasure of playing it and thought it was an exceptionally sounding instrument....
When I first saw people use the term woody, I interpreted it to mean hollow sounding (as you would expect of a dried piece of wood). To this day, I’m not really sure if that’s what they actually...
