Re: Why So Few Resonator Mandolins?

Something else I've been wondering: How loud are Dobro mandos from the OMI era or earlier? How does the volume compare to Nationals?

Re: Why So Few Resonator Mandolins?

    He's my mando muse.

If you listen to Get Your Nose Outta My Bizness, keep in mind that while the CD photos are of a new National reso, the recordings are with a regular old Gibson. He just gets...

    Re: Mandolin Care?

Okay for the top, but it won't get much of your finger oil off the strings. Better: soft cloth, like a bandana or shirt sleeve.

Re: coolest shirt I ever had

Can't help you, but I'll take a turn and tell you mine: The black cotton snap-button cowboy shirt someone abandonned in my tent at Woodstock. Perfect fit. Wore it till it was tatters. My first cowboy...

    Re: Waxing the mandolin

Thanks! Just found some Butcher's Boston Polish in the basement. My strings happen to be coming off today, so I'll give it a try.

I got black, too. The price was right, and they're purdy little things.

    Re: Rubner Tuners

    Good to know. Thanks!

I got mine on sale, too. They're not the color I would have chosen, but the price was right and they are nice looking even though the color isn't period-correct.

    Haven't...

    Re: Finish cracks?

Hey, we all know what pristine means. The question is, do you care? You got a nice price. Are you okay with the finish flaws?

If you are, you have two choices:

    - Keep it and enjoy it.

    - Tell...

    Re: Waxing the mandolin

Your hairs are getting through this unsplit and unscathed. Guitar polishes have fine abrasives that buff and clean, the same as 3M Machine Polish. I don't think waxes contain abrasives. Waxes add...
  17. Re: If it's not the heat, is it the humidity?

When the weather's dry, I just spritz some water in the soundhole with a pump bottle every day or two.

When the weather's wet, I give up.
  18. Re: Best way to learn to play Smooth and Clean (not sloppy)?

I had a friend who, God help us all, was learning banjo. He had a beginners book, probably a Mel Bay thing. On page 8, a box at the bottom said:

How do you get that clean, fast sound?

  19. Re: Embarassing Question - Which Mandolin to Bring to Jam?

Welcome, Babera! You came to the right place. No question is embarassing around here, so make yourself at home. I'm fairly new to mando, too, and this forum is full of good folks with good experience...

  23. Re: I canít remember if learning guitar was this hard

    PS -

For what it's worth (the paper it's printed on?), I've been playing guitar for over fifty years and am still learning how.

Sure hope mando doesn't take that long!

    Re: Consignment Advice

Here in Maine, the only shop I know of that's willing to do consignments charges 25%. It's a reputable store with lots of traffic.

We have a Guitar Center that probably does it, too, but who uses...

Yup. A plywood instrument will never win a shoot-out with a solid-wood axe. Northfield: Good company, good choice!
