    Re: Mandolins on airplanes

My wife and I flew from SLC to PHX a few years ago with 2 mando (carry on) an extra set of strings, and some small wire cutters without issue. Flying back, the TSA person was getting rather hostile...

    Re: Mute Pedal Switch?

I'm at work so I don't have it in front of me, but I like a pedal I built. I hijacked a circuit for a MXR clean boost pedal, but I changed to boost so I only get about a 12db boost (down from...
  3. Re: Travel to Austin, TX, May 1-5... jams or sessions?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I met up with the Old Time crowd at Rio Rita on Tuesday and had an enjoyable jam. Very nice folks. I didn't make it to Fiddler's Green until my drive out on Friday,...
  4. Re: Travel to Austin, TX, May 1-5... jams or sessions?

Thanks for all the great suggestions and links, folks!

Tommando, do any of these look like something you're going to hit? The Tuesday Rio Rita thing looks like my speed... I'm not much of a...
  5. Re: Travel to Austin, TX, May 1-5... jams or sessions?

Fiddlers Green looks like a great place to drop by even if they don't have a jam.
  6. Re: Travel to Austin, TX, May 1-5... jams or sessions?

Great! Thanks for that... I'll try to get over there.
  7. Travel to Austin, TX, May 1-5... jams or sessions?

Are there any good intermediate level jams or Celtic sessions in Austin, TX next week? I'll be in training during the day but would love to pick a few in the evening.

    Thanks, Paul
  8. Re: another mando - mic option I just found....Bartlett

I'm late to this thread, but I came across it because I'm doing my anal-retentive pre-purchase research... I can't afford to buy and reject multiple pickups and I've got several gigs coming up that...

    Re: Shop Pictures

Arnt, I love the shop layout, the tool cabinet, and your selection/collection of tools. My shop keeps edging closer to being workable, then backsliding into disarray. Actually it's workable but I'm...

Re: Truss rod in a pancake mandolin?

I've got an original Bozeman Flatiron "Pancake" that was built in 1981... one of the early ones. I've had it since it was new. It was before they started putting truss rods in... the neck is still...

Re: New edition of Loar plans

    4324... that's my unscientific guess.

Now my two cents on drawing size and shipping. I liked the old drawing size. The only problem I'm aware of with shipping is that Elderly insisted on shipping...

    Re: Intelli tuner question

I get the impression that most of these tuners have a problem of locking onto harmonics and I find that they work better if I play the octave harmonic (12th fret) rather than pluck the open string....

Re: New Loar Plans - Hogo?

Unless you're referring to a more recent discussion that I missed, Adrian had been selling these through Elderly Instruments. I just looked and didn't see them listed on Elderly's site. I hope...

    Re: Rant Alert: CD cases!!!

OMG... I'm glad the CD was okay and found its way to you! That's a CD I really want... I've got the 2004 MMQ Nutcracker on CD and the 1991 release on cassette. A week ago I looked around on Amazon...

While I share some of your frustrations with "jewel" cases, I just keep spares around and replace the broken bits. Having worked in Information Technology for years, I end up with so many promo deals...

You may be in the minority, but you're certainly not alone. I've known a number of folks over the years who have been turned off by Dawg music but many of them have liked Old And In The Way,...

    Re: Any capo recommendations?

Have you tried the Paige that I linked below (or above... depending on how the thread sorts for you ;) )? Since it clamps at the center of the back of the neck it provides pretty consistent pressure...

    Re: Any capo recommendations?

I don't ever use capos... my fingers are too fat as it is and I find a capo really gets in my way. I do own a Kyser and a Paige, and I think Paige is the way to go if you want to capo.

    Re: devaluing of Gibson F9s

When I bought mine (I lose track, but it was about 5 years ago) it was when Guitar Center was closing out their Gibson mandos. There was a big thread on it here on the 'Cafe... they were selling for...

Could it simply be that people don't have the discretionary income right now for instruments? Or are other mandos holding their value? My F9 gets compliments (the instrument, not the player) all the...

Re: Workshops! How to make the most out of them?

I record, take sparse notes, etc, but for me JeffD's "Most important" suggestion is, well, the most important thing I can do. If I can take time to play with what I've learned it will be burned into...

Re: Grandfather's Clock -- Anyone play it?

My mother used to sing this to me when I was a tyke, and it was my now 17 y.o. son's favorite lullaby. I've played it on the mando for years, and there's a local clawhammer banjer player who makes it...
