  1. Re: Best practices for starting to attend an Irish session

I think Amanda's last paragraph sums up a good approach - namely attend the session without your instrument to see what tunes are played at it (and see if it's even a session that you have an...
  2. Re: Tell me of your love affair with an A style...

All my mandolins have been A-styles barring the one F style I owned, a Weber Custom Gallatin which I really loved but like others have said already on the thread, you just get more bang for your buck...
  3. Re: Has anyone played in Ireland Jam Sessions?

I thought that might be the case, just wanted to clarify it in the event anyone else reading who wasn't aware of that assumed Ireland was in the UK.
  4. Re: Has anyone played in Ireland Jam Sessions?

During the summer we have all the summer schools happening so there's lots of music about. In the winter I wouldn't say there are "limited opportunities" for people to do other things - it's the 21st...
  5. Re: Lark in Ennis - Marla Fibish teaching there

Are ye on Facebook? if so they have a Facebook page so maybe you could send them a message that way.

    Re: Mando or banjo

The 5 string banjo wouldn't be big in Irish trad music, but the tenor banjo certainly is - here are two of my favourite tenor banjo players:

    If the OP is looking...
  7. Re: Has anyone played in Ireland Jam Sessions?

Yes, I always send folks to either the Cobblestone or Piper's Corner if they're in Dublin wanting to hear trad music - other places advertising sessions or trad music in the city can be hit or miss,...
  8. Re: Has anyone played in Ireland Jam Sessions?

Paul hits the nail on the head: not all sessions in Ireland are alike - some are advertised as "sessions" but are actually paid performances aimed at attracting tourists and others are actual...
  9. Re: Lark in Ennis - Marla Fibish teaching there

I'll definitely try to get down there to say hello one day that week, hope you're keeping well!
  10. Lark in Ennis - Marla Fibish teaching there

Just heard about this week long event happening down in Ennis from May 20-24th, some great instructors lined up, including Marla Fibish for mandolin and Angelina Carberry for tenor banjo. The...
  11. Re: Has anyone played in Ireland Jam Sessions?

Just a heads up to the OP - we don't call them "jam sessions" over here, just sessions (ye might get a funny look if you walked in somewhere and asked if they had "jam sessions" there ), also...

Re: Keeping up with the Fiddlers

In addition to all the great advice above re: economy of motion and the importance of relaxation and playing with a light touch, another thing to be aware of is not to rush the notes as you play them...
  13. Re: What are some of the best Mandolins that you all have played?

My Girouard! And for ones I don't own: A great F2 in a shop once, a Gilchrist Model 1 that was the business, a lovely Collings MT2V that I was sorely tempted to buy but didn't.

    Re: The Nomad (mandola duet)

Ah that was the business Colin and the mandola really suits it! I know that tune as The Princess Royal - learnt it off an Angelina Carberry album years ago, think her version was done on a tenor...

Click on "settings" over in the top right hand corner and it brings you to a page where if you look to the left hand side of it and scroll down you'll see an option to "edit signature".

    Re: Good picks for beginner

In the cheap and cheerful category of picks my favourites are the Jim Dunlop Delrin500 picks, especially if you use the shoulder end of the pick to play with, rather than the pointy end. I like how...
  19. Re: Going out of tune upwards... Explain this to me, please!

Depending on the time of year/weather my mandolin's tuning might be slightly flat or slightly sharp. Old strings make it even more inclined to do so, always my reminder that it's time to gird myself...

    Re: Ruhland At Carters

Saw a Carter's post on social media recently saying that they were finally moving into their new premises across the street, maybe that is contributing to a delay in replying to emails?

    Re: Fletcher tenor guitars?

The other video does indeed show a tenor banjo player, Angelina Carberry (my former banjo instructor from back in the day!) and the fella in the video with her is her now ex-husband Martin Quinn, who...

    Re: Fletcher tenor guitars?

I bought a second hand Fletcher Tenortone from a cafe member here about 12 years ago. I'd been wanting one for ages as I'd read about them here on a cafe thread and then had gotten the chance to meet...

    Re: Vintange Mandolins in Ireland

Someneck Guitars in Dublin sometimes gets in vintage and/or high end mandolins - I played an old Gibson A there back in 2019. Just outside of Galway Clareen Banjos down in Clarinbridge has mandolins...
