    Probably more Rhode Island-esque. :)

    Re: String comparison forthcoming...

Thomastiks on the L&H— never liked them on any other mandolin. Dogal Calace Round sounds on bowlbacks mostly.

    Re: Five String Madness

Maybe time to measure again... some discrepancy here? "Measure twice, cut once." You first talk about a 2" range and you took the shorter scale down and inch and the larger one down two inches. Or...

    Re: String comparison forthcoming...

I have been using NBs on practically all my fretted instruments, mandolins and guitars. I don't use them on my Lyon & Healy or any of my bowlbacks. I loved the Monels but find the NB a wee bit...
  5. Re: President Garfield's Hornpipe - Writing a variation to the me

I like the swing variation in the A part and the B part goes everywhere: cross-picking, minor key, etc. Very cool. Nice to see that you are are not afraid of B-flat. I have been digging lots of...

Re: Coloratura for solo mandolin (2020)

Doesn’t look like a vintage snakehead unless it was refinished and f’bd replaced.

It actually looks like a Kentucky KM-272.

    Re: Italian Bowl back case

The problem is that bowlbacks are proportioned differently. For instance IIRC Calaces are fairly large around the midriff whereas Emberghers are slimmer in general. But even those made by the same...

Re: Ant. Mossimo bowl back mandolin

Ah, yes, Monzino. They made many mandolins in their shop in Milan. Often labelled either "A. Monzino e Garlandini" or "A. Monzino e Figli". They also made flat-back mandolins of unusual design.

Re: Coloratura for solo mandolin (2020)

Lovely playing and beautiful composition? I love how it "sings" and flows. Very nice sounding mandolin. Who is the maker? Thanks so much for sharing.
  11. Re: The merciless camera (recording ourselves as a reality check)

Yes! There are thousands of headless musicians out there, especially fretted instrument players. The fiddlers can't make a video without seeing their faces unless they crop unbearably close. In...

Re: A Pearl of Great Price A-4

Ah, collector mania! At one point in my earlier mando-life I had one of watch including the mandobass. All were black except the MB which was brown. Sold everything but my A- snakehead. Good luck in...
  13. Re: Stan Jay, Pioneer of Vintage Instrument Fame Fighting For His

Andy played that black snakehead for decades since I knew him back in the 1970s. I think he has played the Kimble maybe for the last decade or so. He could play a tennis racket with old strings a d...

Re: Minuscule mandolin on eBay UK

Exceptionally cute but I wonder whether it will actually play or sound like much. I guess you can get a sense by putting a capo on the 10th or 11th, maybe 12th fret of a regular mandolin. You may...

Re: Pretty odd, not so pretty

Agreed. Pretty much on all the Washburn line mandolins, rarely ever on the reverse-scroll mandolins. Here is fancy one from a top-of-the-line Washurn style 85 bowlback from the 1890s.

Re: A Pearl of Great Price A-4

Re: Pretty odd, not so pretty

Yes, very common budget guitar as NickR notes made by Regal and sold under a bunch of labels or no label at all. Here is the design patent by Frank Kordick in 1914.

    Re: The Myth of Perfection

More on wabi sabi: just an attitude that in the journey to perfection we can still appreciate the imperfections along the way. A wonderful outlook on life in general—it is all good.

    Re: The Myth of Perfection

I am convinced that perfection is a process not a final goal, more the getting there than the arrival. I am also fascinated by the Japanese concept of wabi sabi, which, believe it or not, I first...
