    Re: Shure sm57

I agree -- the A8 works really well for noisy situations, though I find myself cranking up the reverb a bit. And, likewise, a condenser works really well for recording -- I record directly off a...

    Re: Shure sm57

The '57 is a legend, a workhorse, I have been using them since the 70's. In fact, I still have one from the '70s. I have tried to kill it, but it won't die. :)

    Re: My new Aria M-300

I had that happen with a mandolin which belonged to a friend of mine. I used Gorilla glue, which worked OK. There is probably something better though. A silicon adhesive would probably work as well...

"This was not disclosed in the listing, which I'm a bit upset about, but it will allow me to remove it which will make cleaning it easier, so I guess it's a mixed bag. I'll obviously want to reattach...

    Re: Eastman Octave Mando...

There are LOTS of thoughts here re the Eastman Octave... look around for a bit and you will find them. I have had one for a while, and I like it a lo
  6. Re: Mandola with octave mandolin strings?

I tried tuning a TC mandola as an octave. The TC had a slightly longer scale than the Eastman, but the results were less than spectacular. With heavier strings -- the tone definitely wasn't there....

Re: Flatwounds on an Eastman MD315

I have used TKs on every mandolin-family instrument I have owned, including five Eastmans. I initially like the smooth feel and the reduction in pick-noise. After playing them for a while, the TKs...
  8. Re: "Anileda," by Stellario Cambria and ...?

Thank you for the information re those groups. I will actually enjoy the cataloging and digitization. But, perhaps they will be interested in the originals once I am done with them. They might also...
  9. Re: "Anileda," by Stellario Cambria and ...?

    Thanks much, Frankie.

I don't play much Italian mandolin music, or classical, but I know there are a lot of people who do. There are also some arrangements of popular songs from the twenties and...
  10. "Anileda," by Stellario Cambria and ...?

I have just come across a cache of mandolin sheet music, some dating circa 1915. I have no idea how much "good stuff" is in here, but sitting right on top is an arrangement of Tschaikowsky's "Chanson...

    Re: Eastman Opaque Finishes Question

    Yep.

Hey, it's worth a shot. We are all looking for ways to improve the sound of our mandolins. If you decide to take down that finish, if you would be so kind, take "before and after" sound...

    Re: Eastman Opaque Finishes Question

I am thinking that the finish on the gold top (I have one, too), might (might!) be a bit thicker than others, but I kinda doubt that you could noticeably improve the sound by simply removing what...

    Re: Another tru oil question

I have used Tru oil and Tung oil, mostly on custom rifle stocks, but my favorite is Lin-Speed, which is basically, a linseed-based varnish. It goes on very thin, and takes a lot of coats, but seems...

Re: No frills vs fancier mandolins

"Bling," at least when applied to Martin guitars, seems not to matter when it comes to sound. I managed a acoustic music store back in the seventies, and we sold more than our share of Martins, both...
  15. Re: Found a decent case for my Eastman OM

I found this one a while back. It also works well:

  16. Re: Eastman 'cello-guitar--'cello "convertible" for less than $25

Yep. It's basically a copy of an L5 Gibson (or with the oval hole, an L4) Gibson apparently made a handful of L5 bodied 'cellos and at least one L4-bodied 'cello/
  17. Eastman 'cello-guitar--'cello "convertible" for less than $25

If interested: Making your Eastman a convertible 'cello to guitar, and back, after some initial investment in time, for less than $25.

I know at least one other poster here has converted his...
  18. Re: Installing a K&K in OM - Question about location of endpin ja

I installed an L R Baggs Anthem in my Eastman 'cello and used the existing endpin hole to run the jack through, and then attached a screw-in type strap button in place of one of the tailpiece...

Re: New picks and pick noise

Welcome to the rabbit-hole which is finding the right pick.

I too started out with Fender heavies, then went to Ovation heavies (which are no longer made). Years passed, and I got back into...
  20. Re: New Eastman won't stay in tune - bad pegs?

Yeah. Two of mandos sport, respectively, Schallers and Grover 309s. I can't say they stay in tune longer, but getting them back in tune is a whole lot easier.
  21. Re: New Eastman won't stay in tune - bad pegs?

From my experience, "better" tuners can make "getting back in tune" a bit faster, since they usually more precise, with less play, but the need never goes away. I check my tuning every few songs. It...
  22. Re: New Eastman won't stay in tune - bad pegs?

Yes and no. My 915 specs said it came with Gotohs, but it actually had Schallers. I have noticed, at least in the 900 series, that sometimes individual instruments stray from the published specs. For...

Re: How Much Difference Do Speakers Make?

TWO THUMBS UP for the Edifiers. I have one set hooked up to the flatscreen in my bedroom, and another I use for the music in my spare room. Decent sound and enough volume for you to actually hear it.
