Re: Rot smell on strings how to get rid of it?

The wrong sealer may have been used. Linseed oil vs. boiled linseed oil. I had a 1920s door which really stunk to high heaven; the paint had a solvent in it which smelled like piss 80-100 years after...

Re: Rot smell on strings how to get rid of it?

Yes. I did it once when I was 14 years old. And once again while camping near a remote town for a summer.

My thinking is Depression Era practices exist for a reason and we should remember them....

Re: 2003 Weber Absaroka - what's it worth?

Holy Resurrection, Batman! Will this thread never die?

I'm looking at an Absaroka which the seller says has a label stating "Alaska Edition".

This might mean Sitka spruce top?

Re: Rot smell on strings how to get rid of it?

You could boil the strings. I used to do this with banjo strings to get a little more life out of them. And skip the product.

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

He did indeed, Pete. Pat bonded with my old Collings and felt he did right, bringing her back to life. The old frets were nearly flat lines at that point, and tone had suffered. He expertly removed...

Re: Changed back to nickel-silver frets

My 2003 Collings MT2 sn:231 was recently refretted by Pat DiBurro. He is a firm believer in all-original. Factory frets are the only way to go. "Medium" .080 x .040 18% nickel silver frets and nut...

Re: Changing hardware on Collings mandolin

The bushings, I knocked out from the other end when doing an amateur refurbishment. Swapping in a cast Collings tailpiece for a stamped tailpiece on a 2003 MT2, I do not remember any great issue...
  9. Re: Weber factory tuner I.D. wanted / Adjustment question

Thanks, Mike. That was also suggested by the seller. Changing the string is the first thing they would do.

And because even my deficient ears could tell the strings were approaching dead, I...

Re: Emory Lester playing a Givens and Weber

Very neat! I thought the 1991 A-3 #595 was best until your pick, the A-6 #601 from the same year, played. Very interesting. Thanks for assembling this comparison.

    You're too kind!

Thanks, Hank. Have you ever thought of upgrading the tuners, or do they work for your purposes 99% of the time?

    Re: Looking for beginner mandolin.

Over the decades I've owned a dozen $40-$50 mandolins. The cheapest barely-playable mandolin was $40 in 1977, and $40 now gets you a new Rogue. But to really be able to run all over the fingerboard,...
  16. Weber factory tuner I.D. wanted / Adjustment question

    Hello!

By the time I acquired this 02/2016 Rawhide, its build sheet was lost. Both Weber and the vendor had similar responses. So I turn to you.

Can you identify the brand and possibly model of...

Re: Classified search question - mandolin tuners

Maybe I'll eventually speak with a guy who uses 6-8 guitar sets a month. I'm guessing he has an inside line to the company, and probably has a few mandolin sets in a back cupboard.

    Wow, look what...

    It does indeed! Thank you!

And a big shout-out to Lawrence KS. I motored off the interstate for drive through town en route to Wilson for camping and CzechFest a few months back.

Classified search question - mandolin tuners

    Hello,

I've tried several times to search for mandolin parts-only. Specifically, Waverly machine heads. F-style tuners. But it brings up instruments, not parts.

Is there a way to search for...

    For mandolin -

I use the TP40 and like its pointy tip. Soon I'll add a TP45.
