I have been listening a lot to some Jelly Roll Morton. I also like that blusey, dixie land sound. Seems to me if someone liked to play dixie land that it could be done on any instrument-frankly I...
Why not a heavy hitter like Niles Hokkanen. A day or two with him could last you a year's worth of lesson work. Well worth the travel and reasonably priced.

The best way to learn a tune is to listen to it about 200 times before playing it. It comes so much easier that way.

I really like the Jelly Roll Morton stuff-Dead Man Blues, Cannon Ball Blues (is this what we feel when someone is shooting cannon balls at us??), or New Orleans Bump (fantastic!).

Well I have a similar interest for this type of music for mandolin. #I just bought a cd called Villa-Lobos:Complete Music for Solo Guitar, featuring Norbert Kraft, on guitar. #It is excellent. #Maybe...
"If you play the melody, all your breaks will sound different. #If you don't play the melody, all of your breaks sound alike." #I think that is a true statement. #Adding your own twist on the melody...
I need to dig I bet I have a version of one those mentioned.

That is a great tune! I would like to learn that one. Hey the Bush cd sounds good.

Just hum it out in that scale. If you start a G version on the G note of the E string (1st position), just transfer that start note to an A note. I thought that the A (second finger) on the D string...
Hey that does sound good! Frankly I do like the Blues and that specific style of Greek music you are referring to. But its spring you know, warm weather, Greek islands, those terrific gyros, and of...
Hey thanks Niles, those are super. #I hope I can figure out how to load them in to Musedit. #By the way, I loved that movie! #Always keep windex around now... #
I will look in the European section...
Last night while watching Rick Steves Greek adventure I heard a tune that has driven me to learn some Greek tunes now. I was curious if anyone knew of a site similar to say Traditional-Music.org...
Oh found this site a couple of days ago. Makes for some interesting back up practice variety! http://www.tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/jigs.html

I have been listening a lot to the cd "Travelers" by Peter Ostrusko. Their are several great tracks on there. I started working on part of the first track "Old French" yesterday. There is another...
Really I think that many (all) of those issues have a column by Mick Maloney. And I just opened no. 16 to find "Cregg's Pipes" by Maloney. Hot dog that is a tune I am learning now for a session.

I am an intuitive player when it comes to drones. #I worked on some celtic drones in some old Mandocrucian digests. #For starters some are fairly easy, others more challenging. #What I have found on...
Alison K. is really a very funny lady. Just hearing that comment now makes me laugh. Could anyone take her seriously? Guess some people don't have a sense of humor. Its an absurd statement-meant to...
Here is an excellent site http://www.traditional-music.org/. A great study in ornamentation as some tunes are shown in 5 or more variations (including sheet music and midi). A regular stop for me...
Go to the Folk of the Wood site and check out that brand new 17 inch Goldtone tenor Banjo. I think that is the way to go myself-just a personal opinion. Spend extra and do the best....
Hey have you seen this one on the Virtual Session
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/folk/sessions/ ?
I think its quite good and really different from any version I have seen before.

Picking Bob,
I found this site yesterday http://www.traditional-music.org/show_category.asp?cat=4 . The midi's are slow and simple enough to grasp them by ear. Check out how many versions they have...
Roland I have an oldie too (metal body). And feel the same way lately about improved playing on it. I was curious have you ever tried light weight strings on yours? I would be curious to hear about...
How fast is fast? I love jigs and have noticed since I have been playing them habitually, that my right hand has fisted up better than ever. I never was a poster or sloppy right hand player, but I...
I have begun learning a lot of (standard?) celtic tunes lately. I found that many of the tunes on Co-Mando are very elaborate. Which is great for adding some spiffy moves to a tune core. For example,...
