Thanks for posting this - Cafe members came through - nice work, you guys! And having the perp face some justice is icing on the cake.
I saw Dan Hicks at Symphony Hall in Boston in the early '70s, just after the the Lickettes and Sid Page had quit (I think). So just him and a bass player - and still one of the best live shows I ever...
Re the old thread - I bought a junker mando a number of years back, and in the pocket of the original case I found a bunch of old Gibson individual mandolin strings, and an old orange Gibson string...
Thanks, pop1 - I do that pretty often, though I'm old enough so that actually looking in the mirror is getting dangerous! I'm afraid that when I do comparisons that way, I play in such a way to...
Thank you Charles E.! Look how old that thread is - nearly 18 years! Answers a lot of my questions, from folks who would have the real scoop.
I saw Monroe on stage many times, and more than once he...
Thanks, Charles E. I knew those existed, have been around for a while, no? I wonder whether Bill M. ever used them.
Thanks for the input, pops1 and goose 2. I'm thinking I do like the tone of the lighter set better, but wonder if I lose significant volume. When we get out of this quarantine thing I want to get...
Please forgive me if this has been covered a lot already.
I'm wondering what string brand/gauges Bill M. used. I imagine that for a lot of his career he used anything and everything that was free...
Right, Andy Miller. Be sure you buy a cutter that's intended to cut steel wire, not just soft copper wire. You'll wreck the soft wire cutters in no time.
Beautiful playing, Shaun, and a fine-sounding instrument.
Wow - some band! Sierra and Stuart killing' it.
Thanks for posting this clip, Allen. Very sweet old-time duet.
Hmmm - run away.
Well, that was completely amazing and wonderful! Thank you!
Looks pretty classy - anyone out there played one of his F-5s?
Another method would be to glue the sandpaper to your hand and sand-as-you-play...
I agree with DavidKos - not a good idea to rest any part of your hand or wrist on the bridge of your instrument. But many players brush the bridge slightly, using it as a "depth gauge" to pick more...
If there's a real edge where your picking hand rests, just take a piece of 200 grit sandpaper and carefully round it off a little. Even a very slight round will make it more comfortable. I've done...
I second what David L said. But I guess it's possible that a porous material might mute the back vibration less than pressing it against your belly. Now I gotta go see if I have a chunk of open-cell...
I agree with those folks saying that setup is crucial to a beginner. Many guitar-oriented businesses don't know how to adjust mandolin actions.
My pet peeve is string height at the nut - many...
I'm no expert on Gibson mandolins, but didn't early A-models come with solid ebony bridges? Which brings up the question - has anyone here who has one made the swap to an adjustable bridge and...
Get well soon, C.J. I love your music. (Saw you at Joe Val)
What is the "F" cylinder head?
There'll be a shortage of artichokes in my house!
