    Re: Harmony Monterey mandolins

You are right. Harmony Sovereign it was, not a Monterey. No wonder Re: Conversions, they well worth it

    Re: 1908 Calace?

Not a Calace. The label is a fake. There is a seller in Italy on ebay that regularly lists such fakes and seems to be getting away with it, having good ebay feedback.

    Re: Harmony Monterey mandolins

I once had an old Harmony Monterey guitar that needed a neck reset. Apart from that it was one of the best sounding guitars I have ever played. Could have been a one off thing, you never know. I let...
  4. Re: Do you know the name of this instrument from a shop i Paragua

A small guitar :)))) I guess a hybrid instrument of charango-cavaquinho type for the use of guitar players. Double first courses may not have been there originally. Basically it is a guitarlele in...

    Mario Maccafferi Boatback mandolin

An interesting one, clearly Mozzani inspired boatback (Maccaferri was his apprentice once).

    Re: Luigi Poppi Bowlback Beauty

Beautiful. I wonder if a Cafe member got it? Not sure if this one is a double top, there were some made by Poppi. Scalopped fretboard and the craftsmanship are great on this one.

Re: Any information on this Embergher?

The top needs to be very carefully stripped of the present hideous finish and needs repairs afterwards. As this is a valuable instrument I wouldn't trust this job to just anyone. There are only a...
  8. Re: Help identifying this "Jul. Heinr. Zimmerman" mandolin

Just noticed this old thread. I have somehow missed it a year ago so will put my five cents in. Zimmerman was a large scale importer. He had also a factory, I believe in Markneukirchen, where he...

Re: Rafaelle Calace Cl. A model 1921

EUR 3500 is very optimistic I'd say. Something along 1500-2000 would be more realistic, but still can take a while to sell, as bowlback mandolin market is very small. One can always list on ebay...

  13. Re: What's the Eastman MD305 of Bowlback Mandolins?

That 2008 bowlback Andreas Eastman sounds nice, it is the same Eastman and the price is OK. I'd hit the button on that one. The label also reads supervised by Daigoro Ochiai. Not sure how much input...
  14. Re: What's the Eastman MD305 of Bowlback Mandolins?

I guess it also depends on where the OP is located. Japanese ones are readily available wherever you are. Totally agree on American Conservatory, but they can be hard to find outside of US. In Europe...
  15. Re: What's the Eastman MD305 of Bowlback Mandolins?

Suzuki or Ibanez or any other budget-friendly Japanese bowlback would be good starters. $300-400 should get you a nice one. Most of them would be second hand, though, so choose carefully.

  18. Re: Tell Me About My Suzuki Violin Kojo No 2

Looks like you've got a pretty old one. Pre-WW2 I guess. Exactly the same ones were sold by George Manby in UK and Australia under his own brand.

    Re: help identifying this mandolin

Marcelli tailpiece was found on many German mandolins before WWII. The whole instrument is a bit of a crazy mix of styles. It is a flatback, has a baroque type German rosette, has Roman headstock and...

Was going through ebay today, there is a seller from Italy with lots of mandolins, several supposedly top tier instruments with highly dubious labels that look almost handwritten. If you were to buy...

Re: Ernesto Vacca Venezia - uncommon maker

Mick, I can't quite work out the address either. The label is covered with sort of varnish that got fairly dark over time. Modern Vacca's label appears to be hand drawn.
