I am sincerely sorry if I offended you, or if what I said discourages you from interacting with the forum. I am "someone random" here as well. I thought you were blaming your technique and thought...
I'm happy to be corrected, but I don't feel like breaking strings as a beginner is normal. My right hand has all the finesse of a potato cannon and I haven't broken a string on any of my 3 mandos in...
I’m glad to hear I didn’t steer you wrong Bill, and welcome to the club! #29 is Carpathian with a French polish. When I first got it I raised the action to load the top for volume, but was able to...
There are a couple of RAG threads you can fine on MC. I own #29 - love it. It's the best value mando I've come across. Judging by the video I'd say mine has a similar tone- stronger in the low and...
A very curious version of Old Joe Clark
Great news indeed. I was starting to worry as there had not been an update in a bit. Sending all the best to Andy and his wife. His playing is an inspiration.
Quail is a pretty bird off Hartford’s Hamilton Ironworks is one of my favorites. I’ve always found Boneparte’s Retreat rather mournful if it’s played right.
I got myself #29 (built in 2017) for a Christmas present last January. It is a Carpathian & maple french polished F. I went to his shop, got the tour and played the 8-10 he had there. Nice guy &...
How about: somebody (not the owner, probably a kid) idly picks up the mando, plays it a bit, puts it back improperly. When they close the door leaving the room the mando falls, glances off the bass...
I know what you are talking about. I get it on my G and D courses when the mando really wakes up. Some kind of magic happens and certain notes just project like crazy. I too think of it as kind of...
I would love to be added to the list if you’ll have me. Thank you everyone for making such a fantastic resource available!
FWIW, The same thing happens on my apple device(s) on safari. I’ve never been able to see/ click thumbnails. It’s certainly possible I need to update or something. Dunno
A friend of mine in NYC took lessons from both Barry Mitterhoff and Andy Statman. That was some time ago, but worth looking into. I recall he said the Statman lesson was a bit...
Maple will be more or less extinct, so most high quality mandos will feature backs and sides of “flamed MDF” and most will have tandem adjustable bridges for some reason
Also, in the future, when people say “two point mandolin” they will be referring to the Duffy Duck style, which will have become very popular.
I’ve got $10 to say it goes the other way - the mandolin of the future will have a minimum of four scrolls. (Mind you that’s $10 in 2039 dollars)
There are a couple flat top round holes on Cincinnati CL you might check out. A Flatiron and a J Bovier.
I was in your position until recently. I can’t speak to the higher end Kentuckys or Eastmans recommended above, but I was able to find a local (enough) builder, go to his shop, try out maybe 8...
