  1. Re: Care with old mandolins and modern cases...

For a relatively inexpensive solution, (at least compared to Calton or Hoffee) try one of these. It fits my 1918 L&H like it was made for it. Should fit most shorter-necked mandolins.

    Re: Silverangel custom green 2-point

Most of the time when a mandolin is described as "quite unique" it's a euphemism for "hot mess." Not this time! The color is really nice and the inlays are eye-catching but not gaudy. If it sounds...

Any chance it's ramin? The grain and color look right.

Don't you wish it could tell you its stories, Sue? I'll bet it has some good ones!

I'd love to hear both it and the Stradolin.

Nine is the perfect age to start an instrument. She's old enough to practice without help, mature enough to easily learn tab, notation, or whatever other system the book uses, and as you described,...

Re: Who makes a good Fiddle/Mandolin case?

Tony, I recently bought a Bobelock mandolin case which is suspended—not surprising from a company that does most their business in violin-family cases. The Calton I have is not. Go figure.

Re: Who makes a good Fiddle/Mandolin case?

Gunnar, "suspension" comes from violin world. If a violin's back is in contact with the case and the case falls, you risk a soundpost crack in either the back or the belly. That's a nasty...

    Re: Trigger Finger (s)

Mine was also a middle finger. When I went in for the surgery, the pre-op nurse said, "Oh yes, we have to get that fixed. That's your 'driving finger!'"

    Re: Ugliest F-4 ever?

Oh lordy, I wonder if that was her inspiration! I always figured the angel had it in the wrong hand in the block print because the printmaker forgot things print as a mirror image.

Same problem or even worse. I worked as a picture framer for many, many years. A woodblock print came through for framing, titled Angel With a Mandolin. The "mandolin" had a peghead bent at a 90...

    Re: Case for L&H?

It fits like it was custom-made for it. I don't think an asymmetrical Style A would fit, but any Bs or Cs will, and the early As, with the symmetrical points, just might. There is room for a longer...

Re: How to play these notes?

They're double stops, where you are picking and fingering two notes at once. The top notes are the open A strings, the bottom notes, E, G, F#, E, will be played on the D strings, fingered 1, 3, 2, 1....

Gunnar, check the outside dimensions of a double case against what an airline will let you carry on. They are pretty big—I'm not sure one would fit in an overhead bin.
