  1. Re: Gilchrist's D log mandolins, do I have one ?

It doesn’t appear to be listed as having wood from the D log, but that’s one hell of a beautiful looking mandolin you have there… The maple back is spectacular…
  2. Re: Gilchrist's D log mandolins, do I have one ?

I thought the D log referred to a log of sugar maple rather than spruce?

Re: Northfield Mandolins - Big Mon vs Artist

I have owned and/or played several of all the Northfield offerings. Actually it was hearing and playing a couple of Big Mon instruments that first attracted me to the Northfield. However, since that...
  4. Re: Carter Vintage Guitars is now Carter Vintage Exchange

That's the key right there... "certainly not $39K better".
  5. Re: Carter Vintage Guitars is now Carter Vintage Exchange

While there will always be a market for boutique and vintage guitars and mandolins, I see that audience getting smaller and smaller... especially for expensive vintage instruments. I think sellers...

    Re: Bourgeois M5A Mandolin

Good point! The F5S, even at its current retail price, is unbeatable. Pre-owned models routinely sell for under $3K.

    Re: Bourgeois M5A Mandolin

Seems like a very high-quality instrument built for the Bourgeois brand by Eastman... who now is in "collaborative ownership" of Bourgeois. Seems comparable in price to the Northfield M model, but...

    Re: D'Angelico 2 Point/Reischman

Those DA mandolins have some of the best tone ever... especially those 2-point models. I played one at Mando Bros years ago that was one of the best mandolins, hell... instruments, that I ever...

Re: No plectrum but fingerpicking only

I recently saw a young musician (I forget his name) on YouTube doing a fingerpicked version of Robert Johnson's "Love In Vain" on the mandolin. I was very impressed.

    His syncopations, rhythm, feel...

    Re: Virzi today...

Some of the best Loar era F5s I’ve ever played had a Virzi in them.

Also some of the best Loar era F5s I ever played did not have a Virzi in them.

Make of that what you will…

Re: Amber Big Mon at Dust Strings

I did play it… unlike other NF F2s I’ve played this one didn’t knock me out. I’d go with an Eastman A model oval hole instead… a MD404 or MD504 if you can find one. These two models are an oval-hole...

Re: Should I Resist Waverly Tuners?

My favorite mandolin tuners of all time were Gilchrist's "reworked" Gotoh tuners that he used for many, many years on all his mandolins. They always worked effortlessly and perfectly.

    Perhaps...
