    Re: Wood ID

The bottoms of the drawers are veneered. Everything else is solid. Sides, top, and drawer fronts a little over 3/4" thick. It was an ugly reproduction with little value, so time to repurpose.

    Re: Wood ID

I always think I'm being thorough when writing a post, but reading my initial post I can see I'm not clear. The wood in the first post is interior wood from the drawers, so not necessarily a...

    Wood ID

I disassembled a mahogany dresser from the 1940's. The "mahogany Association" sticker in one of the drawers guarantees that all external wood is mahogany. It's some pretty nice stuff and I'm going...

For a $6000 mandolin, IMHO, yes that is ¨wonky¨.

    Re: scraping celluloid bindings

I need to clarify. I'm asking how long should I wait after gluing celluloid bindings with duco cement before scraping. I know they swell when glued. How long should i let them "cure" before...

    scraping celluloid bindings

I'm getting a lot of different answers to the question , "How long do you wait to scrape celluloid bindings?" I trust the mandolin cafe more than most forums. How long do you wait?

    Stain in top wood

I'm carving a top from some torrified red spruce. As I am nearing my desired arching, a discoloration has appeared in the wood. I'm not sure what it is (looks kind of like mold), or what I can do...

    Re: Blue chip thickness

Google says a extra heavy fender pick is 1.2 mm. 50/1000¨ is 1.25mm, so any of the blue chips with 50 in their name should be very close to the same thickness.

I've never heard that one, and I don't see how it could be true.
  17. Re: Should I put a Mandolin Cafe Sticker on my Vintage Lifton Cas

It is your choice, but you asked. I'd buy a decent case (maybe like a crossrock ~$75) and put your mandolin in it and your sticker on it. Save the original case for if and when you sell it.

Re: Cheap Mandolins With Hideous Scrolls !

IMHO the Monteleone is beautiful design with wonderful lines and proportion, and has very little in common with this Morgan Monroe. I'm not much of a fan of open scrolls, but the Monteleone is an...

    Re: buying tonewood

If you would consider a used band saw, you could get a lot of wood and a saw for $1500. I have a used delta 14" with the 6" riser that I bought local for $375. It performs everything I've asked of...

    Re: Electric Mandolin Build Help?

IMHO electric mandos have much more sustain than any type of acoustic mandolin. I find the double strings to be a bit overkill. I also think the tuning in fifths keeps one a good distance from...

Re: A new A with mostly Australian timbers

That's beautiful, and I love the button / binding detail as well. The Australian red cedar is lovely.

I think the instrument strikes a really nice line between modern and traditional.
