Re: Embarrassing moments and them dang capos!

Just where are you putting your capo and why?
  2. Re: no mandolin content, seeking help for daughter

I believe that Tanglewood guitars are available in Canada but I wouldn't know their prices. I'm very happy with mine and all other owners that I've spoken to are equally happy.

Re: Newbie Question on Playing Scales

On further reflection, knowing where all the notes are is good, but playing the scales starting with the root note is probably more beneficial for ear training.

Re: Newbie Question on Playing Scales

It seems to me that learning all the notes is the way to go but don't loose track of where the root note is. As you're doing it in Word maybe you can type the root in bold. It might be jumping...

The old adage of "sleep on it" is apparently true too.

  7. Re: Never seen this particular combination of G-sharp and G-natur

As a fiddle dance tune I don't think it's really intended to be accompanied is it? That is, it's in the same tradition as Irish session tunes. Brenda Stubbert is a well known Cape Breton fiddler -...

    Re: Goldtone GM-6

If the mandolin gives the sound you want and suits the style of music you want to play, stick with it and give it time. I've seen several beginners jump from instrument to instrument in the hope...

    Re: G Chord

Do you need to play it with four fingers so that it is a moveable shape or are you literally just playing a G chord? If it's the latter, why bother with the extra two fingers? The open strings are...

Re: Big Bellies and Little Mandolins

From experience I can tell you that a bowl backed instrument and a bowl fronted player is not a good mix.
  16. Re: Newbie Mandolin Player - Epiphone vs. Flatiron

My first mandolin was an Epiphone MM30 but I now mainly play an Ovation. Of the two the Ovation has the better sound but I find the Epiphone easier to play for a reason I haven't understood. To me...

I think some of the older Matons just had an M on the headstock instead of the full name.

    Re: Mp3 recording software

Not sure that comparing a piece of software with a piece of hardware works. If it is comparing a laptop (running Audacity) with a portable recorder (Zoom) I think the recorder would have to win on...

    Re: Transcribing on mandolin

Agreed, but I think it needs to be implemented at a young age and maintained throughout life. The same applies with singing; watch African or Polynesian singers and enjoy their natural harmony. ...

    Re: Transcribing on mandolin

Every week I go to a tune class where the tunes are taught by ear. I know I won't remember them well enough so record the lesson then transcribe it the next day. Then I can reinforce the previous...

    Re: First Mandolin?

Having said what I did about using bouzouki for chords I was watching a band last night. (flute/whistle, fiddle, bouzouki, guitar)

Firstly, your guitar experience will help a lot, and conversely many of us have found that taking up mandolin has improved our guitar playing. One significant difference is that on the mandolin...

I have an Epiphone which I was quite happy with as a beginner instrument. It's not so good at the bass end but otherwise sounds OK. My main problem with it was lack of volume for playing in Irish...
