    RIP Arthur Stern

I haven't seen it mentioned here, but Arthur was a friend to everyone in the mandolin world and a brilliant artist. He was a long time forum contributor and a fountain of knowledge and experience...

Re: Mando vs. Mandola for swing jazz

Johnny Gimble played a 4 string mandolin tuned as a mandola. Aaron Weinstein posted a couple of videos this way as well.

    Re: Hamlett Pick-Off!

I like the ProPlec and the Dawg picks best and the Primetone 1.5 guitar shape right there with them.

Re: Looking for something darker and throatier

For 5k-ish I'd be looking at a used Ellis A model. They are on the darker, bassier side of traditional.

Re: Who makes a good Fiddle/Mandolin case?

I owned a Cedar Creek mando/fiddle case for a while. It was HUGE to say the least. Convenient in some ways, but bulky by any standard. I found it much easier to walk jam sessions with my two...
  6. Re: Mandolin Tasting: Gibsons, Buckeye, Duff, Northfiled

Thanks for doing this. I haven't watched the reveal yet, but I've listened to the original several times over different speakers. My pick 6 is my favorite, and probably not by a little bit. A...

Re: Amazing Nugget F5 at Carter's!

Ross is a killer fiddler and mandolin picker. His sister plays and sings for Asleep at the Wheel. Much talent in that family!

Re: The New South (Almost Complete)

What a great video! Train 45 at the end is pure JD.
  10. Re: The Slocan Ramblers ft John Reischman /// Stoney Creek

    Really nice picking all around!
  11. It will be interesting to see how this plays out....

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I've used both services, and their use cases for me were slightly different. But, Truefire is incredibly affordable (not that Artistworks is overly...

Re: Compare these 2 mandolin sound samples

B has more of what I prefer, mid-range and depth of tone. A is brighter and more crisp, but just not my preference.

Re: Powerful A models in the 5K range

Kimble, Duff, or Stanley. I was going to say Ruhland as well, but the last A model that was listed was well above your budgeted number.
  15. Re: Rest in peace - Choro das Tres loses member

That's horrible news. I was blown away by their musical generosity and kindness when I met them several years back in Austin.

Re: Engleman Ellis F5 at Gruhn

Can you really trust the builder? :)

The silking on that top is stunning.
  17. Re: The Humours of Ballyloughlin - Mandolin

I read this as Humors of Belly Laughing.

    Fine picking all around!

Re: Help! Drowned out by fiddles!

Maybe a little assertiveness is in order, but I notice much of the response you're getting is about how you can be louder. Music is dynamic, the fiddles don't have to be going 100% all the time,...

    Re: Women Builders

Debra Amesqua, a former fire chief, builds beautiful instruments. I don't think she has her own webpage, but here's one of her instruments.

  23. Re: Best Cases for Temperature/Humidity Control

I don't know about best, but as the freeze was descending on Houston, I cased all of my instruments and put them up off the floor. My Calton cased instruments didn't even lose tuning.

    Re: Kentucky km-900 question

I have no idea what spruce is on the top of those, but I will say I have one. It is a fantastic instrument, particularly given the cost. I use it for shows I'm not comfortable taking my Gilchrist. ...
  25. Re: John Monteleone "The Chisels Are Calling" movie trailer

Hoping this gets picked up and distributed widely. A beautiful tribute to a master craftsman.
