I have very sad news to report. JP Charles died at the end of July in his home city of Salvador, Brazil. For those who didn't know him, he was an excellent swing and choro player on the bandolim as...
JP:
I said hello for you-she said that she'd be in touch.
Hi-playing the domra has really helped my emando playing-particularly in the right hand area. Due to my playing electric over the years, my right hand technique was very inarticulate; I played lots...
I'm not familiar with an e-domra, but really, an electric mandolin is closer to an e-domra than a mandolin as it normally has four (and not eight) strings.
Do I play an e-domra?
Just in case you didn't know, the LABO will be playing two concerts in February. We'll be in San Diego on the night of February 2nd and we'll play a matinee in Los Angeles on the 3rd.
If you've...
Wesley:
I've used a Polytone Mega Brute with a ten inch speaker (no tubes). I've also used a Musicman hybrid with two ten inch Celestion replacement speakers. Keep in mind that Wes Montgomery...
My outlay has probably been in the mid-hundreds but for the last few years I've been using the same pick (which is a Russian domra pick). If I lose it-I'm cooked!
Nice-what is Milkplop?
Aravind- I love it! Congratulations on your fantastic performance. Please continue on this path (and regards to your guru).
Very sorry to hear this; he was an inspiration to many musicians, including me.
I know this isn't all mandolin but the LABO is playing Saturday night at Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, featuring the awesome Tamara Volskaya, virtuoso on the mandolin and the domra. She played with us...
It was great!
Domra, of course...
Tonight at UCLA 's Schoenberg Hall I'm playing with the LABO (in the 2nd domra section).
This will be very intense-Charley Rappaport will be there, along with my guru, the great Iryna Orlova, who...
Sad news...I'm very sorry to hear this. He was a swinging player.
A comment-it's not so easy to find nice electric mandolins anywhere. I found my first on 48th Street in NYC-a Gibson Florentine electric-just luck! Having said that-there's an Earnest five-string at...
Well...I use either a Roland Cube 30 (clean channel), or my Polytone Megabrute for larger gigs. I play very softly, in small places so I don't need all that much firepower. Any clean amp can...
I think that it's easier to get the clean jazz sound with a good amp and a nice pickup-in the neck position. I have used Duncans and I thought they were fine. I currently have Bartolinis on my...
Why not try a four-string? It's easier on your fingers, and lot of fun to play!
DJ, I have owned Schwabs with Duncans and Bartolinis and both pickups are excellent. We started using the Bartolinis after I had one installed on a custom electric mandolin (by Alan Carruth). The...
I was inspired by seeing Ralph Towner and John Abercrombie play. I know that Abercrombie tunes it like a guitar, but, oh well, it's still a mandolin. On the same subject of alternatively tuned...
Blues, mostly. I've been listening to Cream again, after seeing the Albert Hall dvd. Also, an oud pice by Issa Boulos called 'Midnight Meditation.'
I've used either 9, 11, 18, 28, or 10, 12, 18, 28 for around 25 years. I spoke to Max Junger of Pyramid Strings at the NAMM show and he showed some interest in producing a set of electric mandolin...
