    Re: A Tone I Like

I was working out and writing a melody the other day, and it was more convenient not to have a pick in my hand. Sounded pretty good, but I'd be even slower than usual if I played that way.

    Re: What's in your case?

Picks, a tiny tuner, and the tailpiece in the (very small) compartment, wiping rag (old handkerchief), spare e string, and humidifier at the head end.

    Happy New Year! :)

I predicted better vision globally in 20/20 - I'm not even going to make a guess about this year. :(

    St. Nick's Reel - Gallopede

The first tune is, I think, original. Since I wrote it in December, and it has a jaunty feel, I gave it a seasonal title. The second tune is a traditional from the northeastern US and Canada.

Re: Is this a trad tune?

Thanks for checking it out. Fifty + listens, and no one's said it's familiar. Unfortunately, I can't edit out the link in the original post.

    Is this a trad tune?

It decided that I wanted to play it, but I'm not sure if it's a trad tune I've (mis)remembered, or if it's somewhat original. I'll probably leave the demo up only a few days, as I want to do a...

    Lark in the Morning

On electric (Ryder EM44) and acoustic (Gibson A0, 1916) mandolins. Could probably stand to be a bit faster, but this is as fast as I can handle, and a bit more :)).

Re: Should I buy a Charango?

They have an interesting sound that is hard to duplicate with other instruments. (Maybe an 8-string uke would be similar?) I've found the flat but wide neck on mine difficult to navigate sometimes....

    Re: Reading suggestions

The new bio of Levon Helm is pretty good - seems well-balanced. Some mando content, too, though not much bluegrass.

    Re: Why Mandolin?

I taught at Oberlin for a couple of years in the early 80s. The college had a great, somewhat folk-oriented concert series, and Mr. Bill played one year and Trapezoid the next. I still think of the...

  19. Re: Ukulele Chords Played on Mandolin: Something is Wrong

Assuming your mando strings are tuned to the right pitches, playing uke chord shapes will not get you the same chord as on a uke. If you play the 1-finger C chord shape that works on a uke, on a...

  22. Re: Two Hornpipes: Rights of Man and Off to California

Hornpipes are instrumental tunes in 4:4. To me (and there are certainly other points of view) hornpipes often have a swing rhythm, while reels are played with even 8th (etc.) notes. Hornpipes tend...
