    Come down from the cross.
    We could use the wood!
  3. Re: Looking For a Luthier near Cleveland Ohio

Woodsy's in downtown Kent does good work. You could take it there.

Bob Smakula in Elkins, WVa has done great work on my old Gibsons. He comes to Cleveland regularly to see his Mother.

    Re: The Parrot mandolin

I got up close and personal with the Parrot in Phoenix earlier this year at the Musical Instrument Museum. My photo of the back focused on the Parrot, not the button. I guess I was blinded by the...

    Re: RIP Jerry Lee Lewis

My favorite Jerry Lee line was on his version of Early Morning Rain, on the London Sessions album IIRC. He's ad libbed a line after singing about those big 747s-

"Honey, I'm the Killer, but I sure...
  7. Re: Going rate for an post-Loar 1920s Gibson A4?

[/QUOTE] I first became aware of out-of-tolerance fret spacing on old Gibson instruments a little over 20 years ago. Since then, I have measured quite a few of them; both mandolins and guitars. The...

  9. Re: Duff A style mandolins, like to hear owner thoughts, some ?

I had Bob put a new fingerboard on a teens A that had intonation problems. He did a great job and solved the intonation issues once and for all.

Re: In Praise of Matt Flinner's Classes

Somebody needs to present an opposing viewpoint here, there is way too much unanimity for the Mandolin Cafe. Someone needs to grumble that Monroe would not have approved of his classes, or that Lloyd...

Re: Family photo, NMC, looking for ID

That picture is better, and you are correct about the wrapped string ends covering up parts of the peghead.

Check our this Fairbanks & Cole Clipper model from about 1885:

Re: Family photo, NMC, looking for ID

    Hank

That's a head-scratcher. At first glance Dad's banjo looks like a fancy Boston model from the early 1890s, something like a AC Fairbanks Special Electric. The inlay pattern going up the neck...
  14. Spotted in Phoenix- a Parrot and early Orville

    197547

Visited the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix today and was very pleasantly surprised to get up close to DAWG's Parrot Loar and a very early Orville Gibson A.

Season 1 of C & R was great, and I have recommended it to anyone who would listen to me. Season 2 is focused on George Jones, with the recent episodes concentrated on his stormy marriage with Tammy...

Re: The Sound of the American Mandolin

What Tony Williamson doesn't know about mandolins is not worth knowing.
  17. Re: Open-back banjo recommendation for a mandolin player?

This is a great suggestion. You cannot go wrong calling Bob Smakula and asking for his thoughts. He really knows his banjos and always has a great selection of instruments on hand. If I didn’t...

    Re: Luthier in Cleveland, OH?

I had some mandolin set-up work done in February at Woodsy's in Kent. I see that they reopened last week. Give them a call at 330 673-1525. They do good work at a reasonable price.
  22. Re: We got your Gibson snakehead mandola right here!

Could someone please explain this for me:

    FINGERBOARD SET FORWARD 1 FRET

I’d rather not watch a 15 minute video on the chance that I could find out.

    Thanks!

I recall that there is a very cool and large painting of a Civil War officer in the men's room. Not sure the video tour would include that.
