Re: Pedal novice question re: preamp pedal

The insert send and return is internally connected "normalled" when nothing is plugged into them. This means your signal passes uninterrupted from input to output when nothing is plugged into the...

Re: Trusted Mandolin Luthiers in Minnesota

Just seeing this thread. I could setup your mandolin if you have not found someone to do so already. You can find my contact at scottliebers.com

    Re: Slotting fingerboards

Where did you do that? I've played 7 so far strung out over a couple of years. 40 in one day might make me go into a seizure.

    Re: Spray Booth ideas

I did a similar thing as Soliver. A furnace squirrel cage blower. It never produced enough suction to pull all the fumes out. I found an explosion proof fan similar to the one in the link. I...
  5. Stringjoy Foxwood mandolin strings first impressions.

I was one of the lucky winners of the Stringjoy mandolin string giveaway a couple weeks ago.
I chose the coated Foxwood 11-40s to try out. My favorite strings of the past were Daddario EXLs,...

I'm thrilled that I won this drawing. I plan to post a report once I try them. I'm going for the coated Foxtrots medium. I'm expecting good things about these since D'addario discontinued my...

Re: Should I become a luthier?

    [QUOTE=amkroenke;1911392]Hello all,

I do mostly custom built-in cabinetry and shelving and stay quite busy and make a good living.

This statement answers your question for you. Stay in...

    Re: Sealing colours under lacquer

Not all nitro is compatible with a shellac sealer. Seagrave and Behlen worked well. I switched to Cardinal a few years back and had adhesion problems after it cured.

    Re: What effects sound?

Nothing directed at you Dave. I apologize if it was taken as such. The topic of the post was misleading to me on first glance at the title. It's a worthwhile question to ask, but certainly not one...

    Re: What effects sound?

True. However, "affects" is the verb and "effects" is the noun. Easy to get mixed up. Being a recording engineer, I see "effects" in terms of a reverb or delay anywhere I read it. The English...

    Re: What effects sound?

I too will grab my popcorn for this thread. When I first read the title "what effects sound" I thought it was about a reverb effect on a recording, or program patch in a digital reverb.

    I won't...

    Re: Repair frustration

That is unacceptable. Mandolins are no different than guitars when it comes to fretwork. Frets should be set by the time you pick it up.
This tells me I need to raise my prices for fret work. ...
  14. Re: can I glue a flat (slightly arched) top and back to the flat

From a guitar building perspective, arched tops and backs get the respective radius sanded into the rim with kerfing attached creating a dome to the entire surface. Radius dishes with sandpaper...

    Re: Varnish vs Lacquer

Thanks. I'm going to revisit using Truoil again. I hadn't thought of adding mineral spirits when it sticks. I managed to topcoat one mandolin with it years ago. I really like the look it gave...

    Re: Varnish vs Lacquer

I could not get FP over oil to work for me either. It was too much work on the top around the fingerboard extension. I too had checking of the shellac later on.
Do you wipe on Truoil, or spray...

    Re: Varnish vs Lacquer

I don't disagree with you. I'm just stating why I use it based on my experience. Gibson adds a lot of plasticizer to their nitro. It peels off like you described even on the most expensive Les...

    Re: Varnish vs Lacquer

Alkyd based oil varnish is softer than lacquer and never quite hardens like lacquer does over time. The way I do it takes 10 times the effort over lacquer. I like the look, I can get it very thin...

I never use a whole can before it dries up either. I tried bloxygen once. I found better results decanting into small mason jars until there's only a small air gap. I then vacuum seal the jar in a...

I used to brush it with a good quality artist brush like Will uses. I now spray it with a v-fan airbrush mixed with epifanes thinner and accelerator to speed up drying time. With the v-fan sprayer,...

Re: Builder keeps making changes with repair

There are a few of us up here. Lots of guitar repair shops, but not many having expertise with mandolins. I've found it helps to be a proficient player to do great fretwork and setups. That's not...
