Re: Learning to Play the Mandolin

    Brad,

I just took up the mandolin and I don't really play it, yet. I know maybe four chords. But... I go to YouTube and just type the words " Backing Track " and pick something not fast paced rock...
  2. Re: Is there an easy way to convert TAB to notation?

TAB is still used all over the place in guitar circles. Why would it be considered so last century for the mandolin?

    Guitar Pro does it:

Re: How to search through a big PDF?

There is a big difference between the free Adobe Reader ( I think it's called Adobe DC now ) and a full featured PDF product like Adobe DC Pro. There may be others, of course. Just to be clear, what...

Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

    Catmandu,

You comment is exactly why I want to start with the best fingering technique. I'm trying to get the scales down and arpeggios of common chords down, in my guitar playing. I sort see the...

    Re: The cure for MAS

I like being a rank beginner. The Breedlove sounds good to me and I have not the skill to find it's limitations. So, maybe ignorance if what it COULD be like is the cure for MAS. I have very little...

Re: Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

"don't avoid using your 4th finger"

No problem there. I use it all the time for scales or solos on the guitar. I think it's one advantage to being left handed but playing right handed.

    Thanks...

Clarification on Finger to Fret assignment

I can understand the first finger handles frets 1 and 2, while the second finger handles frets 3 and 4, stuff, but... what if the notes in the scale, or riff or melody are just half steps apart? I...
  8. Re: Overwhelmed beginner - merging of styles/genres?

I was starting to learn a few things, from this thread, but I may have to start my own question to get some clarification. However, when I read this..

"Is there much done on a guitar that...

    Re: Beginner song list?

"think about the tunes that you enjoy listening to, and then learn them"

To be honest, I was never a big fan of Mandolin tunes. Mostly, I guess because most of what I heard was rather frantic...

    Beginner song list?

I really did try the search function but it doesn't seem to find my word choices.

I would like to start with some tame songs that I can find music/tab for that is not blue grass standards. It's...

Re: Best Resources for Chord Sheets?

Do you want them like " charts " that jazz folks use or the chord diagrams in order or something else?
  12. Re: Now that I have actually tried playing one.. a few questions

While changing the strings, I learned the best tool to get the new string going in the right direction, as it comes out from the tail piece is the loop end from one of the old strings.
  13. Re: Now that I have actually tried playing one.. a few questions

The one thing I gleaned from Sierra's video was that I may need to press very close if not on the fret and not well back of it, as I might on a guitar.

I'm working on learning the major and minor...
  14. Re: Now that I have actually tried playing one.. a few questions

I put on a set of EJ73s and the clarity down the next is much improved. Probably due to new strings and lighter gauge strings. I'm not sure what gauge was on it before but it was noticeably bigger. I...
  15. Re: Now that I have actually tried playing one.. a few questions

OK, my left hand is OK, but I may need to see if I have the right pick angle.

The thing I find I have to keep checking is where I am picking between the fretboard and bridge. The darn thing is so...
  16. Re: Now that I have actually tried playing one.. a few questions

I'm surprised as well that making chords beyond a few fingers is difficult. I have a 12 string guitar, so it's not the pairs of strings. I'll check the setup, since I downloaded the setup guide from...
  17. Now that I have actually tried playing one.. a few questions

I received the Breedlove that I purchased from the classifieds today. So, after tuning it up, I started trying out my fingers and a flat pick.

    1) I watched a few videos on playing and I think...
  18. Re: Expanding my searches. Thoughts on USA Ovation mandolins?

    Cha-ching!

I have a set of TI strings for one of my guitars. I haven't decided which one, just yet. Never tried them before. I better like them.
  19. Re: Expanding my searches. Thoughts on USA Ovation mandolins?

I've seen D'Addario ball end mandolin strings.
  20. Re: Will being a lefty, but playing right handed be more limiting

" remembering not to use guitar patterns is murder. "

That's something I was wondering about.
  21. Re: Expanding my searches. Thoughts on USA Ovation mandolins?

Ovation pickups have always been active. 9 volt batteries in the mix somewhere. The old ones, and mandolins have them in hard to get spots. The newer guitars have them in a quick release spot next to...
  22. Re: Expanding my searches. Thoughts on USA Ovation mandolins?

    Yep.

Still, I don't know if the Breedlove has a pickup....

My wife thinks of a Hooters song when she thinks mandolin. So, a rock mandolin would be good for that application. :)
  23. Re: New to me mandolin coming. Good string to start off with?

    Thanks guys!

Yep. The waiting begins. Then the learning starts. I hope it's a fun experience.
  24. Re: New to me mandolin coming. Good string to start off with?

    Charley is correct.

Monels don't come in that light of gauge. 11-40s is the lightest.
