    Re: Pick for Classical Music

Back in my old mandolin orchestra days, there was only one pick to use on the mandolin parts (maybe 'dolas too) it was a Pettini pick.

Re: F-5 intonation issue bridge placement

I am assuming that "hand made" means amateurish, perhaps an early build for the luthier trying to learn his/her craft? All I can say is I hope you got it cheap. Good on you for helping to support a...

    Re: Pickguard Mountain Brackets

Like I said, the holes are drilled slightly undersized (compared to the pins) so it's just friction that holds them in place. Sometimes a drop of CA glue is used if there isn't enough friction to...
  5. Re: Could use help identifying this (supposedly vintage) Mandolin

If you're looking to "dabble" in mandolin, this one should be good enough to get you started, given the caveats mentioned by rcc56 above.

    Re: Pickguard Mountain Brackets

There are many examples of abbreviated pickguards being attached with 2 small pins (nails) without the use of a mounting bracket. The nails are inserted into holes drilled into the side of the PG and...

Yeah, I see the URL is a USA website too. Why not buy one and let us know what you think. They seem a bit pricey to me, especially if Hobgoblin has to ship from the UK.Too many obstacles to wade...
  9. Re: Ashbury AM-240 Solid Body Electric Mandolin

Guessing they are not generally available here in the USA. Kind of nice looking though and I like the koa body.

Re: NMD Gibson A-1 from 1912!

Bill is correct, no truss rods in Gibson mandolins until 1922 but with much beefier necks, truss rods were not needed in earlier mandolins. No worries on that front. Congratulations and enjoy!!

    Re: 1987 Gibson F5L

The "ice tea" sunburst seems to be more common on Carlson signed mandolins, both Flatirons and Gibsons. I think it's very attractive personally. I recently acquired a Carlson signed Gibson A-5L with...

    Re: Flat Wound Strings

I have developed a strong preference for the Flat Tops EFT-74 on my F holed mandolins (F-12 and A-5L) and Flat Wound EFW-74 on my oval hole (teens F-4). I have tried the TI mittels and starks on the...

  20. Re: String recommendations for Gibson Snakehead A Junior

No, not much of a volume loss if any but definitely a tonal shift with SS flat wounds vs. PB EJ-74s (what I meant to say in my post above). A lot of the strident tone that we all love on a bluegrass...

  23. Re: String recommendations for Gibson Snakehead A Junior

Give the D'Addario EFW-74s a try. They are .011-.015-.026-.036 stainless steel, flat wound strings and while I don't have a snakehead A Jr. I have been using them on my '16 F-4 with very pleasing...
