  1. Re: Tell me of your love affair with an A style...

My Washburn M1 is really an incredible instrument. Much better than its cost would suggest. I also have a Gretsch New Yorker, bought in New York which sounds lovely and plays well, but I probably...

    Re: More Gibson Antics

Bill did that himself. He sent his Loar to Gibson for a service. They took months and when he got it back he wasn’t satisfied. So he thought he’d given them enough free advertising and gouged the...

It can be used in forgeries.
  6. How about a thread on tips and tricks?

    For example

How do you set your amp?

How do you set the effects you use?

    What about strings?

    Or picks?

    JBovier Mandolins

Is Jeff Cowherd still building? The latest stuff I can see is about from 2020 or so, and the website isn’t terribly active.

    Does anyone know what’s happened?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Why do you play electric?

Once I saw Sam bush do laps in seven on YouTube, I had to get one. So I got in touch with Ted Eschliman who sold me a JBovier ELS. I love the tones I can get, and it makes me play a bit differently....

    Re: More Gibson Antics

It’s interesting, isn’t it? At least 10 iconic instruments - Lloyd loars, the l5 the 400, the Les Paul, the 335, the firebird. Let’s not forget p 90s and paf pickups, plus acoustic instrument...

    Re: More Gibson Antics

I have an Artist 335 style that cost me 300 AUD new. It’s plays really well and the electronics are great. I don’t feel the need for a Gibson.

In broader thoughts has there been a less well...
  15. Re: Mike Compton demonstrates his 2008 Duff F-5 mandolin

I had lessons from Mike. Improved my playing infinitely. His style is exactly as it should be. You may have to get used to the sound, like Monroe. But listen to his masterpiece ‘rotten taters'.

  17. Re: What are the chances that a moderately-priced mandolin sounds

Just speaking generally we live in a golden age of instrument manufacturing so there’s a very good chance that a cheap instrument would sound great. I have a few of them.

    Re: Picks for arthritis

V picks make a really thick pick 8.5 mm. You don’t have to hold it so tightly. Pricey, but you only need one and if it solves your isssue, then I’d venture to suggest it’s worth it?

Re: How do you play “split” beat

Sam Bush's octave technique does this. You can sort of hear the 'click' of the muted strings, but that gives a bit more to the notes.

Wes Montgomery on guitar, likely where Sam evolved from did...
