Re: Finally, a Lyon & Healy Set

    That's amazing!

    How does the bass sound?
  2. Re: Violinists: What are the mellow/smooth violin strings? (Nmc)

Although a poster above recommended gut strings, I'd say no on that. I use them for a baroque setup, but they are VERY fussy, expensive, and go out of tune with a half-degree temperature change.

  3. Re: Ordered a Northfield F5S, Received a Big Mon Wide Nut by Mist

I wonder if Northfield sent it out with the wrong paperwork attached.

In any case, it sounds like you got a great deal on the more expensive mandolin. Play it in good health.

  7. Re: Anybody ever make tuner buttons out of Fimo?

Fimo or Sculpey has a bit of flex to it after it's baked—I don't know if that would be a dealbreaker. I think it also shrinks a little bit in the oven, so your idea of drilling the hole after would...

    Re: Galli flat-wound strings

That's a great deal! I ordered Thomastiks from Thomann in Germany last time, and saved a bundle. Now I'm sorry I didn't spring for a set of the Galli. Although, with the Thomastiks lasting a year or...

    Re: Galli flat-wound strings

Strings By Mail has them. They also have a very low-tension set (not flat-wound) aimed at bowl backs. https://www.stringsbymail.com/

    Galli flat-wound strings

Has anyone tried the Galli Supreme flat-wound strings? I just ordered strings and was sorely tempted to throw in a set of the Galli, but didn't do it—this time, anyway. Wondering how they compare to...

I have the black/wine and probably bought it about two years ago. No dye transfer.

    Re: Help me spend $10k

I would go for either the Ellis or the Campanella. Either one would last a lifetime.
  16. Re: Numbering system for Lyon & Healy mandolins

Probably because they changed the system for numbering between 1917 and 1918. As Joe said, anxiety, sleeplessness, and general disorientation!
  17. Re: Numbering system for Lyon & Healy mandolins

I hope someone with more specific knowledge will show up to shed light on this for you.

What I do know is that the L&H numbering system is a mess. Gibson had it together with the dates; L&H...

Here is a review of the Kentucky. I had one at one point and liked it a lot. My kid has it now.
  22. Re: Sheet music with the letters inside the dots (for learning)

Essential Elements, a beginning band/orchestra method, has what you're looking for. The violin version would fit mandolin just fine.

Mandolin Deep Cuts, the examples you have furnished are tab. Once you get to the notes, ledger lines will force the staves further apart.
  25. Re: Making an Open Source / Free Cello Suite for Mandolin Book

The compact version, with one movement per page, might prove difficult. The edition I have of the six suites (transcribed for viola by Watson Forbes) has the preludes for Suites 1-4 across two pages....
