I might sell, but that shouldn't have any impact on the value ;)
Hi,
I'm wondering about the current market value for an pair of A-style Handel Tuners... Been out of the game for some time, so...
Thanks :)

Really beautiful stuff Jean, as usual! Great design and features, wonderful!

If it's mostly not-black you're after, you could try to find a nicely contrasted piece of Macassar ebony... The colour tones would be closer to walnut, but the would be also be harder and denser......
I second the use of a #5 plane. I have actually used my trusty old Record #4 to joint a top, but it was a little too short and I had to work on it quite a while before I got a good fit. A #5 with a...
I do two pieces. I like to have a little vertical strip of binding at the butt joining top and bottom bindings. I think it looks nice and matched the crosspieces we put as point protectors.

Jim, yes of course. I used the term mould to refer to the whole fixture (First language mistake, in French it has the right meaning... )
I was referring to a fixture like the one below:...
Jim, did you make a body mould? You can make one quite easily and cheaply, out of mdf or chipboard. Changes in temperature and humidity will make wood warp, but holding it in place in a body fixture...
Don't forget wood! Marquetry can be beautiful on mandolins too!

Yes, but 79% of statistics are made up on the spot ;)
LOL :)) Attack of the geeks!
There is no kanji for 'spruce' as it is a word that came too late to East Asia. It's written in katakana: トウヒ (to-u-hi). The Japanese sometimes use kanji to write ...
http://grandmainger.com/avatars/smileys/scared.gif Here comes the nit-picking formatting police:
'Red spruce' can only be used when [red] is the first word of a sentence. Any other use of 'red...
Good point, but don't go thinking that a tool is not good just because it's not 'Made in America', though... Some of the best saws and large planes are UK-made and use Sheffield steel. Japanese...
Neat indeed! Do you think they were produced like that, or is the coloration due to ageing of the material? Either way, they are very cool.

Is that so :) ? Funny! I just followed Siminoff's book and assumed everyone was doing the same :D
:disbelief:
Where can I find one like this? (nice mando by the way;) )
Who's the builder? If it's from a small shop, they will probably repair it... They will "know" the instrument better than anyone else :)
I might have just over-generalised, but I was under the impression that most builders carved the inside first, if only because it's so much easier to stabilise the plate to carve the second side.
That's not really the way they think (still today). Making a rug that looks perfect to the eye is quite easy, especially if one sticks to strict symmetry. These are deeply religious people who...
Oriental rug makers intentionally make small imperfections in their carpets, because they believe only God can create perfection.
Maybe Mr Loar did the same ;)
Adrian Minarovic (mandolincafe name: Hogo). Plans based on a 1923 Loar. I think they are regarded as being the best availble for accuracy. They're available through Elderly for $50:...
Luke,
If someone can come up with a spare set of ribs to match it, I have a nice birch back board I will not be using. I bought it from Bruce/Spruce a while back, it has a little figure, and is...
Thanks Andrew. It's nice to see the two together like this. It makes it easier to compare the with of the fingerboards.
Love 'em
Andrew, these two look fantastic! Could you post a full front or back shot of the pair?
Yum!
