Re: What is your favorite Chris Thile quote?

"I would advise anyone who has a Loar — take the thing out of the ***damn case! It is NOT a museum piece, it is an instrument. It is an instrument that needs to be played."

Thank you for this thread !
I love O'Carolan music. I did not know about the O'Carolan Project on the Mandolin Cafe. What a wonderful resource!

    Thank you for posting this.
You know, strings, straps, oval hole, f hole, A style, F style... none of that is as important as kindness.

    Re: Extra long strap?

How wide do you want the strap to be?
There are all leather guitar straps that may work.
I have a Levy's Leather strap for my bouzouki.
It is 1 1/2 inch wide and 51 inches long.

I purchased an Irish bouzouki from Thomann in Dec 2019.

  8. Re: Contemporary Christian Music with Mandolin Solo???

"Do any of y'all play in a Catholic church?"

    Yes, I do.
And I mean absolutely no disrespect to any organist.
Our organist is a talented person.
The point that I was trying to make is that with...
  9. Re: Contemporary Christian Music with Mandolin Solo???

All of this is quite true when playing with a praise band.
If you are playing with a choir and an organist, things are more structured.
Choirs and organs tend to be tied to sheet music. Everybody...

  11. Re: Contemporary Christian Music with Mandolin Solo???

[SIZE=4]A mandolin solo can be as simple as playing the melody line out of a hymnal.
I play with the choir every Sunday. Except for prelude music on Christmas or Easter, I do not play a solo during...

  13. Re: O little town of Bethlehem - Trio -Eastman MD315

That sounds like Canticle of Zachary (Forest Green).
I pulled out my hymnal for the lyrics to O Little Town of Bethlehem. The lyrics fit the melody nicely.
    Well done, Indeed

    Re: Kentucky oval holes

The finish is the only difference in these models.
Same basic oval hole mandolin, just different finishes - honey amber, sunburst, & transparent brown.

Re: Tim O’Brien’s - Father, forgive me

"Tim also likes playing an "octar," which is an octave mandolin built on an archtop jazz guitar. Either will do."

Looks like he is using the "octar" in this video.

    Re: Mystery Brand Mandolin

The photos remind me of my 2nd mandolin, bought back in 1978 (1st mandolin was a bowl back)
    It was a "Hondo" brand.
I think that the mandolin was sold under a number of brand names.

Re: What are your go-to crowd pleasers?

My go to song is "Back Home Again in Indiana"

If there's a lot of kids, I start with Old Joe Clark - it has verses that they can laugh at.
