I've played a Weber F (not sure which model) a bunch, and it's a very different instrument from my Girouard A. Tonally, the Weber is more "snappy" and less rich, and they have very different feeling...
I own two Girouard instruments: an A-style mandolin from 2013, and a GBOM from 2016. Fit and finish are great on both instruments, and Max is a master of setup work.
Tonally, the mandolin is more...
I usually do bottom-of-the-heel (#5 on StewMac's guide), but wasn't sure how suitable it is for the slightly less than sturdy neck joint on these guitars.
Jake Wildwood takes better pics than I can: https://antebelluminstruments.blogspot.com/2017/03/1932-national-style-0-resonator-tenor.html
Jake mentioned the possibility of using a sheet metal...
On the side of the heel or on the back?
I've got a 1932 National style 0 tenor that needs a strap button - where do you have yours? On the heel, or on the body?
My 1932 National tenor is currently strung as an octave mandolin, but it really sings when capo'd up a bit, so I'd like to try standard CDGA tuning.
What string gauge should I be looking for? I...
Interesting idea. I'm a fan of locking tuners on electric guitars, which give a lot of the benefits that these are advertising.
Well that search didn't last long! A forum member saw this thread and offered up a National for sale.
Man, does it sound sweet.
A lot of mandolin players like the sound and feel of a heavier pick, and for a few dollars it's easy to experiment (no need to jump into the realm of $30+ picks just yet!)
If you like the sound...
I like the feel of the Suzuki Bluesmaster - no sharp edges and less catching of the mustache hairs.
It doesn't HAVE to be an old guitar, but there is a certain "cool" factor, and they're half the price of new production.
Can you characterize the difference? It's unlikely that I'll be able to...
Any difference between the chrome and painted (enameled?) models other than color?
Thanks indeed! Great videos.
I'm definitely looking for a single cone.
I blame this video for starting the TGAS:

Obviously it helps that he's a killer player, but the tone...
Mine's the redder one on the left. They sound very similar, but this one has a slightly darker voice, which I liked.
She's basically the reason I started looking at OMs in the first place :)
I've got the itch to pick up a vintage National tenor guitar. I'd love some pointers on what to look for in terms of common problems, and what price point I should be expecting for a "player...
They've completed two, and I think a few more may appear at some point! I was fortunate enough to be able to play both, and both are fantastic instruments. I've had Max install a K&K Twin pickup,...
My measurements are in inches - should have specified that!
I'd love to know how everyone else likes their CBOMs set up:
Instrument:
String gauges:
Scale length:
Neck relief:
Action at 1st fret (bass course):
Action at 1st fret (treble course):...
"capoed at second and fourth" sounds like he may be tuned to D standard and using a partial capo to play in "drop E?"
As mentioned, next time just ask which (concert) key the tune is in.
I use CDBaby for digital distribution. For a recent 5-song EP, iTunes gives me about $3.20 for a $4.99 download (so they take around 35%), Bandcamp takes around 15%, and printing a CD costs me around...
Girouard. I'd rather have something unique from a small hand builder. Plus, I like my Girouard a lot more than any Eastman I've ever played.
I've been thinking about picking up a bass myself. There are quite a few mandolin players around here right now, and I'm certainly not the best of 'em :D
We had some discussion here: http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?127064-quot-Space-age-flat-pick-quot-I-Tone
I found the material to be quite stiff despite being fairly thin. It's an...
