    Re: Why play Mandolin?

I was in college and one friend garnered a spot on an amateur talent show that was on local TV. There were 6 of us and at least 3 played guitar so one guy lent me his Martin flatback mandolin. I...

    Call and Response in F

This is a great way that Baron Collins-Hill (MandoLessons) teaches. He calls it Repeat after Me. It gets progressively more difficult to do it exactly. Fantastic exercise really gets you listening...
  4. Re: Sicilian Luthiers Building Mandolins in 2021

Me neither. I was just responding to the comment about high action and mentioning that the seller says 2mm. That is not high. I guess the proof may be in the playing however I would have some further...

Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

This is the thread where we report wishful thinking. I doubt that that Italian mandolin has any ivory on it and most likely the scratch plate is plastic not TS.

    Re: Biehl mandolins

Jefftro: no need to repeat the same thing multiple times. Everyone who subscribed to this thread can read it. Sounds like one of the cracks on your Biehl is substantial but if your luthier friend is...
  7. Re: Sicilian Luthiers Building Mandolins in 2021

The luthier describes the action here:
Playing action is set to 2mm at 12th fret and despite very gentle twist it is comfortable to play even more advanced music. Bridge height is 4mm therefore gap...
  8. Re: Hey guys and gals, I need some help please . . . old newbie

Chris, you are lucky in that these Eastman OMs are in demand and hard to come by. So, resale should be pretty quick and hopefully painless. In the meantime get yourself familiar with the instrument...
  9. Re: I have MAS and check the classified hourly…

I have heard there is an SO Restoration Center in town and I am afraid that my wife will make an appointment for me or else trade me in for a newer one. As for naming my instruments, I have enough...

Re: Total Newbee looking for info

Nothing wrong with straps but for me personally the only time I ever use one is when I play standing up which these days is rare. Once again, the OP is a guitar player and can probably make that...

Re: Total Newbee looking for info

Congratulations, misterg16! Sounds like a good choice and. Using it from a place that sets it up is smart. As far as a pick, see how you do with your regular guitar picks. Most of us started out...

Re: Should a beginner buy electric mandolin?

That is a bit extreme IMHO. Why bother with an acoustic at all. Just buy an electric to begin with. I guess if you have a quality instrument you can fill it with imported marble to ruin the tone. You...

Re: Total Newbee looking for info

No worries, Mike we understand. There have been at times folks who post here a question and never come back. They forget they even posted.

I don’t know Piccolo music at all but they sound like a...

Re: post a video of yourself

Jo, that is a sweet song. I have been getting into playing OM lately and it might sound good on that instrument. And your lute sounds great. Thanks!

Re: Total Newbee looking for info

Playing guitar for over 50 years and you perform… Do you play a $200 guitar? The reason I ask is I wonder whether you would like a beginner’s level instrument. At that price point even used you may...

Sold for $956. My guess is still this was a standard issue Flatiron with after-market lipstick.

Gruhn's page on the mandolin says:

Looks like a violin-styled mandolin similar to Campanella.

I am just curious... did anyone here win this mandolin? Someone was even crazier than me and I assume that I know this person. They won it at $2,628.93.

Probably not a dealer though because I...

There was some guitar made by Fender called the Maurauder that had hidden pickups. Might have been experimental and never marketed.

    Fancy "Flatiron" Pancake?

Here's a real puzzler. Headstock does say Flatiron but the ornamentation is over the top and the pickguard inlay and tailpiece reminds me of Antonio Tsai and similar Asian workshops.

    The photos...
