Any referrals for high quality custom gig bags? I have a resophonic tenor guitar in need of one
Well I guess it comes down to definitions..
The last snakehead (a quick image search tells me ) I have in the mandolin archive is 83001, so figure right around this serial is where that feature...
Take a guess at the value of Gibson, and where that drop falls in this rather impressive multi-national bucket

Some years ago I saw an ebay auction for vintage string packets. I ended up with about 2 dozen of the wax paper "The Gibson" strings from approx 1905-1915. I'm down to just a handful now, since...
Great story!
Regarding these Loar F5 tributes...
Brief history
The "Gibson" most of us know and love was the original Parsons Street factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Orville Gibson was a lone builder, with an...
heheh
It sounds like the new owners just want to cash out what’s left of any guitars kept in “the private vault” when they bought the name..
to me it looks like a cynical attempt to set their own...
Exactly this. They sound great, look cool, and can be obtained for less than a modern luthier-built instrument. I've horse-traded tons of these in my time, and there were only a few "duds" that I...
I sit on the end of the inbox for the mandolin archive. Every so often it *is* a loar that folks are asking about, but it's just as much fun when it's an A2 or a jr or pretty much any other old...
Did the serial number pop up?
and yes- banana, roger, darryl.. all those guys are very easily reachable, especially with mandolin-related malarkey :)
Thank you guys!
I'm way behind on the archive for sure- I still have good intentions for when my life gets less busy though :)
Very sad news. Condolences to his family and friends. I really enjoyed chatting cats, cars, and mandolins with him over the years!
J74s are perfect for a vintage gibson. The original string gauges were quite close to them too!
I've used them on at least a dozen old gibsons over the years never any problems from the string...
Good stuff Aidan. I've been hitting the Howl at the Moon in Hoxton now and again, let me know if you're up for one in a couple weeks
Hello Graham- sent you a chat on FB messenger.
Short version- We do block some regions where spam/scams are rife. Over the years we've fine-tuned it pretty well though every so often we find a...
This is a great video- George describes his personal Loar L5, and talks about what makes it special to him

I don't have any pictures yet, though it...
This is not a company that is interested in making anything, this is simply a soulless corporate husk trading on a purchased name.

Controversial I think, but I'm using a hybrid of Joe's dates and some of the loar labels, receipts etc for my archive dates. 81xxx may well have left kalamazoo in the late 20s, though the indications...
Yes, definitely down from the peak days. There was a period where the market was quite flooded with Loars for sale. Prices have definitely crept downwards even further, and I'd bet a fair bit that...
It's a beauty, and I bet it sounds great.
I haven't seen another with orange finish under black, so I scanned through the archive.. at least I can tell you that I don't have another one showing...
Hey Vernon.. that's one of only 2 I've seen like it. What happened there to my eyes is a refinish job at Gibson around 1915-1924 or so, as that would be a time that such a color and such a case could...
About 15 years ago (my my), I wrote this story about the experience of having time on a Loar:
Loar Diary
Have a look-see! As to what remains from that experience 15 years later..
I...
