    Re: Postal Mandolin

Oh dear! The plate with the knobs looks like it started life as as a door handle escutcheon - note the keyhole.
  2. Re: Tuner button replacement for 1925 Gibson A Snakehead

‘25 snakehead with worm over tuners - those will be the modern spacing. Almost anything will fit (except the StewMac “Restoration” tuners) providing you’re happy to plug and re-drill the screw holes....

Re: What happened to this poor Gibson "A4"?

What happened to it is a matter for speculation but, as Gibson labels were invariably filled in in pencil and subject to fading, it appears that it’s been over-written - wrongly.

Re: Playing mandolins with a mandolin

It’s a common phenomenon - ever tried out a guitar or mandolin in a music shop? - which is why the better ones have an isolated room in which to try out instruments.

Re: Picks of wood and other materials

Picks are a matter of personal taste. I bought three horn picks from a guitar show, however many years ago; awful things and I’ve yet to find an instrument I can use them on.

Re: Gibson Custom F-5G auction on eBay

Ah! It’s just struck me. I was thinking he’d inserted a new Photoshopped label over the old one whereas he probably just ‘shopped the photo’ of the label to replace the serial number with a squiggle....

Re: Gibson Custom F-5G auction on eBay

I’m curious as to how you scan a label inside an F holed mandolin in order to Photoshop it!

Re: Gibson Custom F-5G auction on eBay

That’s one badly written label - I’m not even sure that the F started life as an F - be very careful!

Re: Cracking deal in the UK?

Something strange about the listing. I checked it after danjec’s last post and it was £1014. Today it’s £1015. Could it be that the 700 odd Cafe members clicking the link but not buying are driving...

    Re: “Miscellaneous Mandolin” at GC

According to the tailpiece, the “miscellaneous” mandolin the pickup is on is a Kay. Interestingly, Kay guitars were available in the UK for a time at that famous music emporium; Woolworths.
  11. Re: Ordered a Northfield F5S, Received a Big Mon Wide Nut by Mist

It does happen. Many years ago, friends of mine ordered two sofas. When they arrived, it was clear that they were upholstered in the wrong fabric. They pointed this out to the shop who apologised and...

Made “for him”? Looks pretty much like a bog standard RM-1 with Hotplate to me.

Re: 12 string bandurria in UK

    Hi John,
Look no further than darkest Derbyshire. Newtone will make you sets of whatever gauge and length you want. Their “configurator” will tell you how much they’ll cost you -...

Re: Fret buzz on new Bowlback Mandola

I’m no expert on bowlbacks - bought one c.1970 and it’s been a wall hanger since c.1974 but it sounds to me that it could benefit from a setup.

    Re: James tailpiece engraving

I suppose it depends upon whether you’re happy with whatever you’re engraving cutting through the plating. Both mine appear to have been engraved prior to being plated.

Re: Silk Mando Bag Used Inside the Case

I brought my first Kimble home in a TKL case and that had a blanket; similar to what Kit describes. I had Keith Calton build me a case shortly afterwards and the TKL has been empty for the last 16...

Re: Silk Mando Bag Used Inside the Case

Like you, I’ve seen then for fiddles but not for mandolins. The last (late) fiddle player I worked with had one. He put his fiddle in it, placed that in the case which itself had a case cover. Never...

I’m not convinced that piezo technology has changed since they started putting them in telephone handsets at the beginning of the 20C.

Re: Speed Neck on Carbon Fiber Mandolin

I really don’t get all this “speed neck” thing but a quick rub down with fine wire wool has traditionally been the solution to a snooker cue sticking to your bridge hand.

Re: Funky old canvas case/gigbag ?

Could it be an early case cover? I picked up an antique leather suitcase 30 odd years ago which came with a cover in material and with poppers just like that.

    Re: Whiskey barrel octave mandolin

The seller’s description sounds like a work of fiction. Is the neck “ oak with a walnut and mahogany fretboard” or “cherry” - he says both + I see no bridge pins!

Re: Gig Bag for Austin Clark OM's
