The only mandolin set with which I am familiar which I am familiar which feature a wound- "A" string are Tomastiks. they also feature the thread windings.

Re: Ready to upgrade mandolin - need advice!

My first mando book. Great book. I am still playing around and expanding his arrangement of "New Camptown Races," which I memorized over 40 years ago.
  3. Re: Chinese made die cast tailpieces - any good?

As far as the strings slipping off the posts while stringing, I simply used a tiny piece of Scotch removeable adhesive putty on the post to hold it in place while I string it -- then take it off....
  4. Re: Chinese made die cast tailpieces - any good?

I have that exact one on my Eastman. Delivered price was, IIRC, eleven dollars (Amazon). I had to redrill one of the holes. It works perfect. I am pretty darn sure, from the weight, that it is not...

The heel works just fine on the Eastman OM.

    Re: Grover tuners

Yep. I got these from an outfit based in France -- I couldn't find them in the US at the time. While not an "upgrade" from the stock tuners (which were Schallers) they satisfied my urge for GOLD. :)...

    Re: Grover tuners

    I sj

True. I did not account for that. Just for clarification: I "swapped" the position of the individual shafts of each tuner (placed the long shafts where the short ones had been, etc.)

    Thanks

    Re: Grover tuners

I installed gold-plated Grover 23O (F-style) on my Eastman. I had to "swap" the tuners from "over" to "under." It took about twenty minutes. I assume the vital parts of "A" style tuners would be the...

Re: Anyone else have no players near them?

I had the same problem. I also tried Craigslist and the rest.
But I ran across the Old Time Fiddlers Association which had a chapter in my State and a district in my area. It has turned out pretty...
  12. Re: Hey guys and gals, I need some help please . . . old newbie

    Also don't forget the guitarrón (four-string) tuned in 5ths starting at E (1) :)
  13. Re: Hey guys and gals, I need some help please . . . old newbie

The order I purchased them in was:

    Mandolin (several)
    Mandocello
    Mandola
    Octave
    Zook

The octave can double (sort of) for a mandolin AND a zook. When I go camping, it's what I grab.

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

Well, it probably depends on the particular situation. I just came back from a (mostly Irish and Old-time) jam session which included one other mando (resonator type), two guitars (sometimes three),...

    Re: Thomastik-Infeld Strings

The TIs should last you the better part of a year, depending on the particulars, of course. A set of D'Addarios might might last me two months. The TIs "seem" to stay in tune better, as well, though...

    Re: Shure sm57

I agree -- the A8 works really well for noisy situations, though I find myself cranking up the reverb a bit. And, likewise, a condenser works really well for recording -- I record directly off a...

    Re: Shure sm57

The '57 is a legend, a workhorse, I have been using them since the 70's. In fact, I still have one from the '70s. I have tried to kill it, but it won't die. :)

    Re: My new Aria M-300

I had that happen with a mandolin which belonged to a friend of mine. I used Gorilla glue, which worked OK. There is probably something better though. A silicon adhesive would probably work as well...

Re: Mandola with octave mandolin strings?

I tried tuning a TC mandola as an octave. The TC had a slightly longer scale than the Eastman, but the results were less than spectacular. With heavier strings -- the tone definitely wasn't there....

Re: Flatwounds on an Eastman MD315

Re: "Anileda," by Stellario Cambria and ...?

    Thanks much, Frankie.

I don't play much Italian mandolin music, or classical, but I know there are a lot of people who do. There are also some arrangements of popular songs from the twenties and...
