My New Years Resolution is to answer every post with "because the world is round."
Luckily, I grew up in an area that is culturally diverse and home to some great music. Blues,Bluegrass,Oldtime,R&R.... so I'm not stuck playing any one kind of music. As far as the caricature part,...
Hank III~:>
Don't fret. When you return to the fold maybe Gibson will be building Gold Top G's.
I'm a lead singer in a BG band so this topic is interesting to me. I'm from the South so the accent is real. I find when choosing a key for a song, I usually go with the key that will push my voice...
I had a toneguard but eventually took it off. I'm right handed and play with the strap over my right shoulder. Only the rim and a small part of the lower back comes in contact with my body, so the...
Seems like I remember a quote from Ol' Bill where he said something like "It's not the left hand or the right hand, it's in between." He had it going on, in between. Eric
There are tonal differences between individual mandolins. Let's say F-5, A-5 style. You have to play and listen for some time to develope an ear for the sound you are after, then the journey begins....
Maybe Frank Wakefield told someone how long you could bake a mandolin. One real benifit would be the finish removed from the back of the neck. No more sticky varnish or laquer on humid summer days....
Here's a photo from the mtns of NC. Shaping up to be a beautiful color season.
You might want to consider the Southern Appalachains and the surrounding foothills. Lots of Bluegrass in the entire region. Pick a nice spot and the music will be there.
Moe, Larry, Joe and Oh no, mister Bill.
I got to spend some time with the Bobby Osborne Fern prototype in an extended late night jam. That mandolin just keeps on giving back in tone and volume and is so easy to play. It's also perfect Fern...
Why would you want to take the rattle out? Ol' Bill had one in his mandolin, so I hear~:>~:>. Maybe it's part of "the ancient tones" Bill talked about. A forum member from Kentucky was kind enough to...
You guys must be Baptists. "You know what dancing leads to." It's a joke already.
Sen. Byrd helped my Grandmother get her deceased husbands black lung benefits, which made her remaining years easier. I'll always be grateful to him for that. I always respected, and was proud of him...
I'm feeling kind of quiet and bored today too. Not enough drama for you. You can learn more about the history and construction of mandolins on this forum, than anywhere else on the net. Do with it...
Thank you for doing this interview Roland. The Kentucky Colonels album, Long Journey Home, was one, if not the most influential album I listened to when I was learning to play bluegrass music. The...
They can be worth it. I like the underdog, that shows up and sounds as good or better than a high dollar mandolin. Probably because I don't have the money. Alot of factory and small builders know...
Is'nt Billy Bright picking an Ellis mandolin. They cut. I'm getting very interested in that tone. E
F5G's are pretty understated as it is. I say go for a tasteful pearl cover, to make up for the lack of binding. What can it hurt. You can always put the plastic back on later. E
ps. Marshall, send...
Kentucky Mandolin, the Bill Monroe-Doc Watson version. Made chills go over me the first time. It's a real rocker, that sounds great loud. Eric
I guess I'll post some of my thoughts here. I think the pyhsical differences between a MM and Fern have been answered. As far as tone differences, it's not as easy to answer. First, I'm a fan of...
I don't think so Jim. In friendly debate. I think it's the players awareness of there chosen instrument. Some fellers are speaking metaphorically to try to get a point across. I've heard people say,...
