    Re: Why the nasal singing?

Luckily, I grew up in an area that is culturally diverse and home to some great music. Blues,Bluegrass,Oldtime,R&R.... so I'm not stuck playing any one kind of music. As far as the caricature part,...

    Re: Why the nasal singing?

I'm a lead singer in a BG band so this topic is interesting to me. I'm from the South so the accent is real. I find when choosing a key for a song, I usually go with the key that will push my voice...

    Re: Took my ToneGard off!

I had a toneguard but eventually took it off. I'm right handed and play with the strap over my right shoulder. Only the rim and a small part of the lower back comes in contact with my body, so the...

    Re: Bill Monroe's Poor Technique

Seems like I remember a quote from Ol' Bill where he said something like "It's not the left hand or the right hand, it's in between." He had it going on, in between. Eric

    Re: Comparing Mandolin "tone".

There are tonal differences between individual mandolins. Let's say F-5, A-5 style. You have to play and listen for some time to develope an ear for the sound you are after, then the journey begins....
  10. Re: Practical reasons for "distressed" mandolins

Maybe Frank Wakefield told someone how long you could bake a mandolin. One real benifit would be the finish removed from the back of the neck. No more sticky varnish or laquer on humid summer days....

Re: best bluegrass town in a warm climate?

You might want to consider the Southern Appalachains and the surrounding foothills. Lots of Bluegrass in the entire region. Pick a nice spot and the music will be there.

Re: red diamond or ellis f style

I got to spend some time with the Bobby Osborne Fern prototype in an extended late night jam. That mandolin just keeps on giving back in tone and volume and is so easy to play. It's also perfect Fern...

    Re: rattlesnake rattle removal

Why would you want to take the rattle out? Ol' Bill had one in his mandolin, so I hear~:>~:>. Maybe it's part of "the ancient tones" Bill talked about. A forum member from Kentucky was kind enough to...

Sen. Byrd helped my Grandmother get her deceased husbands black lung benefits, which made her remaining years easier. I'll always be grateful to him for that. I always respected, and was proud of him...

  20. Re: Puzzled by the high prices of high end mandolins

They can be worth it. I like the underdog, that shows up and sounds as good or better than a high dollar mandolin. Probably because I don't have the money. Alot of factory and small builders know...

I don't think so Jim. In friendly debate. I think it's the players awareness of there chosen instrument. Some fellers are speaking metaphorically to try to get a point across. I've heard people say,...
